Spring (ACT 1 - Scene 5)A Screenplay by Alya Usman
SCEENE 5 Cris’s room. Cris is seated on her bed. Spring enters. CRIS: Oh hey here, Spring! SPRING: Hi (She sits on the bed) Did you meet a guy named Excel? CRIS: Excel? Well yes. He’s the new kid admitted in the house. SPRING: So, how is he? CRIS: How is he? Okay I guess. Alota’ girls like him. But I don’t see anything special in him. SPRING: Oh… alright… CRIS: Why did you ask? SPRING: I just met him on the way here and well… I was a bit rude to him. And I think I should apologize. CRIS: Well… I don’t know where he is at the moment. Probably not here. (Leans over to Spring’s ear) I heard he likes to wander off alone. SPRING: Hmm… Really? (Sighs) Oh well… CRIS: But that guy seems to have an air of mystery around him. He’s very different… and he’s incredibly handsome. He differs from a lot of people here, y’know. SPRING: I thought you said you didn’t see anything special in him. CRIS: Talking generally, he is considered handsome. SPRING: (Saddening) Oh okay, Well… if you see him again, call me, okay? CRIS: What did you say to him, Spring? SPRING: I… I just think it was rude…. The things I said were… rude. CRIS: And what were those things? Spring clutches her skirt tightly. SPRING: I think I wasted his time by talking to him. CRIS: (After an interminable pause. Crickets chirp) That’s it? SPRING: (Nods) Yes… CRIS: (Slaps her forehead) Oh come on, Spring! Do you have to be so freakin’ careful all the time? Give yourself a break… SPRING: But still… CRIS: (Sighing inwardly) Fine… I’ll call you when he gets back. SPRING: (Smiles) Thanks, Cris. I knew I could count on you. A thunderstorm is heard. Rain falling is followed. SPRING: It’s started to rain… CRIS: Yeah… SPRING: I don’t know… but this weather makes me sad for some reason. CRIS: It’s just a gloomy weather that’s all… SPRING: And why is that? CRIS: (Raises an eyebrow in thought) Well… it’s just the way of life. It just happens, y’know. Valerie enters, interrupting their discourse. She has a huge smile on her face along with deep breaths of enervation. CRIS: What’s up Val? You look exhausted. VALERIE: I don’t know about exhausted, but I sure am feeling LOVE-ly! SPRING: Why that feeling? CRIS: (Narrows her eyes) Oh I know… You saw someone, right? Someone special... VALERIE: I sure did! (Hopping up and down) I met the most awesome-est person ever! SPRING: Hmm… And who might that be? VALERIE: His name is Excel! He’s in the dining room right now! He’s so cool! CRIS: (Elbowing Spring) See, I told you he’s popular. SPRING: I have to – VALERIE: (Dreamy voice) And he’s so nice towards us girls… CRIS: Yeah, Yeah. Now Val – VALERIE: - But! But he’s so strange at the same time! He’s a lefty and he doesn’t show his right hand to anyone! CRIS: (Raises an eyebrow) What exactly is strange about that? VALERIE: It’s weird… always hiding your hand and stuff… SPRING: Maybe he does it unintentionally. CRIS: Yeah! That’s definitely the case! (To Valerie) Oh hey Val, now don’t you think you should go check on him? VALERIE: Great idea! See ya’ guys later!
She runs away and exits. CRIS: Finally! Some peace! SPRING: Valerie was just expressing her feelings. CRIS: Yeah, yeah… She gets up suddenly and gets something from her desk. Then she moves back. SPRING: What’s in your hand? Spring tries to peer in Cris’s hand. CRIS: Nothing that special, but I want you to keep it. She unveils a bright silver key and hands it over to Spring. Take it. SPRING: What is it? CRIS: It’s a key – duh! - A duplicate of the key that unlocks my most precious treasure ever. SPRING: (Looking at the keys with meticulous eyes) Treasures? CRIS: Yeah, it’s a key to my drawer. I keep everything there, you see. SPRING: Thanks Cris, that really means a lot. You’re a really good friend CRIS: (Laughs uncomfortably) Hahaha… Don’t flatter me. I’m not that good! Anyway, shouldn’t we be going to Mr. Excel Rudon by now? SPRING: Yes, we should… CRIS: Well then come on! (She gets up and pulls Spring up) What are you waiting for?
