Chapter 2

-Reina-

I’m sitting cross-legged in Runner’s Meadow. I love sitting here. There’s tall grass that sways in the soft breeze. There’s a tree here and there, and there’s animals all over the place. Birds are chirping and you can hear the deer moving among the grass, rustling it gently.

I pull my mirror out of my handbag and set it in my lap. It takes up most of my legs. I get comfortable and begin watching.

My mirror is something special that I have. In heaven, I am just Reina. I’ve spoken to one of the Superior Angels and they have given me the mirror. Its special to me because through it, I can watch anyone. I mostly watch my beloved Jake.

The images blur across the glass, slowly forming an image. I see Jake. My heart fills at the sight of him. He’s laying on his bed, in the way he always had. Just laying, staring at the wall. I know what he’s thinking. He’s thinking of me. And that tugs at my heart.

It kills me to know that there’s nothing I can do to stop Jake’s pain. I long to more than anything but I know I have to let him deal with his grief on his own.

For the beginning of my time in heaven, I am not allowed to walk the earth. I have to allow the people who loved me enough time to grieve. I’m not supposed to help them out. I only get to watch helplessly through my mirror and pray that everything is okay.

I watch him as he continues to stare. I think about the way he would stare into my eyes. He would just lay and stare and stare and I could see emotions dancing across his eyes. Then, he would take his hand and ever so gently stroke my cheek and whisper that he loves me. A tear runs down my cheek.

I hear a knock on Will’s door. Its his mother. I watch the brief exchange. I always thought his mother would handle a situation like this better but I was mistaken. I’d been watching since the day I died and she doesn’t seem to handle it as well as I would’ve imagined.

His mother leaves. I watch Will as his face relaxes ever so slightly. He leans his head back onto his pillow and sighs. I watch as his face contorts into pain and he curls into the fetal position. He squeezes his eyes shut and tears are pouring from beneath them. More than anything I wish I could be there to hug him and hold him. I want to stop his pain. I want to kiss away his tears and assure him that I’m okay and that up in heaven, I’m always watching over him. He doesn’t deserve this pain. He deserves nothing short of happiness. Just then his lips move. No sound comes out but I can easily read his lips.

I love you.

Seeing those words on his lips make me break down. Tears pour down my cheeks and into my lap, splattering the glass. I quickly wipe them away as they fall. I whisper, “I love you, too, Will. Forever.”

There’s a knock again and he cries out when he opens his eyes. He looks over at his sister, Lucy, and wipes away his tears. He pulls himself together and heads downstairs for his family dinner.

This is the first time he’s eaten with his family since I died. I pray that he can get through the meal without breaking down. I settle back to watch.

He walks into the kitchen and the table is nicely set and his brother, Charlie, is sitting at the table waiting. When Charlie sees Will, he brightens.

“Hey, Will!” he says excitedly.

Will looks over and says quietly, “Hey, Charlie,” and smiles at him. I can see the strain in his eyes. He’s really trying.

“We’re having steak, mashed potatoes and corn.” His mother says. “You’re favorite.” she says after a brief pause. His family wants him to be okay again. I can tell.

Of course his family was affected by my death. His sister and I were close and his mother adored me. His dad liked me too, I think. They all did. But they weren’t in love with me. No one was torn apart as much as Will was.

Will smiled. “Thanks, guys.” He sits down between Lucy and his mother. Charlie and his dad sit on the other side of the table. Lucy looks over at Will and smiles. I can see the sadness in her eyes.

“How ya doing, Will?” she asks quietly. I can see the concern in her eyes. I used to hate how Will would talk about how annoying she was. She’s the sweetest girl I’d ever met. She was always so perky. But that was all gone now that I died. Her brother was devastated and she’d lost a close friend. She was only fourteen and she’d already experienced death.

Will leans over and nudges her and says “Eh,” with a strange chuckle. Sarcasm. She knew the answer to that. She reaches for his hand under the table. He squeezes her hand as if he’s hanging on for his life. She doesn’t cringe though. She understands his pain.

The family bows their heads and begins grace. They look like a normal family for a second. His mother says the grace.

“We thank you, Lord, for this bountiful meal You have set before us. We thank You for keeping all of us healthy and together. We ask that You give each of us the strength to get through each day with You by our side. Hear the intentions we keep hidden in our hearts and bless each of us,” she hesitates and glances up for a moment. “Please dear God, we all pray that You are always with Reina and that she always has You by her side. Amen.”

My heart skips when she says that. I immediately look over at Will and see his jaw clench and I know that that cut through his heart. He squeezes Lucy’s hand one last time before he looks up and then releases it and looks up.
