Back in time

Chapter One - the trip in time

“Rebecca! Here please. This will be your seat.” Said Mrs Maple.

“Err miss, where is Rachel?” asked Tina.

“She broke her arm and can’t make it. Here please. Now.”

Tina had to sit by Jordan, the nerdy one in her class. It was the school trip to a castle, and Tina was looking forward to sitting next to Rachel on the coach.

It was lunch time, and they were still on the coach.

“I’m starving.” Moaned Tina. “Rachel was bringing our lunch, but oh no, she broke her arm. Stupid.”

“You can share mine if you want. My mom made too much.” Said Jordan handing her a sandwich.

“Thanks”

“We are here children!” shouted Mrs Maple.

“Are you looking forward to seeing the paintings?”Babbled Jordan. He’d fancied Tina for years. “I am. There is this one with a king on it, and he was king Jor....”

“Miss I need the loo!” Tina called.

“Well hurry up. We’ll be by the dressing up area. Just look for the sign.”

Jordan didn’t want to be on his own so he went too.

When they came out the toilets, they tried looking for a sign, but couldn’t find one. They looked back behind them, to the sides, but no one was there.

“Let’s try round here” suggested Jordan.

They went around the corner, and saw a man dressed in funny clothes that looked old fashioned.

“There you are Master. Back to your studies.” Said the man.

“Who are you?” asked Jordan.

“Oh Master you do like a joke. Brother John, sir. And you!” he said pointing at Tina. “Are meant to be in the kitchens. Back to work you silly girl.”

Tina gave Jordan one of those “Huh?” looks. He mouthed “Meet you here later.” Tina mouthed “OK”, and walked off in search of a kitchen.

“Theodora, where have you been? Please, please will you put an apron and sweep the floor?” asked a woman in a grey dress and apron.

“Miss Maple?” Tina asked wondering who it was and why she was talking to her.

“No. Servant Marple. Sweep.”

Tina swept. It was best she did as she was told.

“When is break?” she asked.

“You might as well go now. Be back in 5 minutes and no wasting time like earlier.”

“Jordan! Jordan!”

Tina ran down the corridor to where Jordan was stood and gave him a hug. They sprung apart, looking shy and foolish.

“What happened to us?” she asked him.

“I think you know. We’ve gone back in time.”

Chapter Two

Live the lives

“I can’t believe we are here. I hate these clothes!” whined Tina. They had to change into ‘Old time’ clothes.

“I know. At least I get treated like a king but I do have to do lessons with Brother John.”

“That’s better than sweeping. I’m your servant. And apparently my name is Theodora. I’m working in the kitchen with someone who looks a lot like Mrs Maple, but her name is Mrs Marple. So, how are we going to...?”

In the distance, a clock bell chimed.

“I have to go. Brother told me to come back when the bell went.”

“But what do we do?”

“Live the lives.”

Chapter Three

Tina’s Theodora’s Life

“Hurry up!” shouted Mrs Marple. “You need to stir the mixture into the bowl not the sink.”

“Sorry but I’m not good at this!”

“Perhaps you could do some sewing then. I’ll carry on with the cooking.”

“How long you been doing this?” asked Tina filling a silence.

“What is wrong with you? I have known you since you were nine and old enough to help out, and now you are asking these questions! Did you fall over and lose some of your memory?”

“No, I was just asking. Sorry.” mumbled Tina.

“That’s Ok. Well when your mother died, things changed...”

“My mom is dead?!”

“Err dear, why don’t you go and take another break or something? I know you were only little, but surely you remember your Mother’s death? Oh, and you have sewn that on the wrong way.”

“Well I don’t care about that! Listen, do you know about my dad?”

“Dad? What does, oh your father? Well, he ran out when you were 1 years old. When your Mother died, I got stuck with you. You always knew how to do things like cooking and cleaning, but now, you are starting to do things wrong after 7 years. Why?”

“You know, I think will have a break. Thanks.” Tina ran out of the door and started crying but she didn’t know why. Maybe now they were back in time and living the lives, she had developed the emotions. Why was this happening to her? And what was happening to Jordan?

“You there! Miss, miss! Why are you here? And what is that?” a tall looking man was pointing at a piece of thread hanging from Tina’s apron.

“I was sewing.” Tina sniffed.

“I see. And why, may I ask, are you outside here and not doing your duties, when your next break isn’t for another two hours?”

“I’m crying here! Why are you so snooty and cocky? Is this what you do to people when they cry? INSULT THEM?!”

“I was not insulting you, and I did not know you were crying. Why are you crying?”

“I was just, err, thinking of my mother that’s all.”

“Ah, I see. Yes your mother was quite extraordinary. She was always reading, or doing this or that. I loved her dearly.... Back to work!”

“Snoot ball” Tina mumbled under her breath.

As Tina carried on with her sewing, her eyes grew heavy, and she felt herself drifting off to sleep.

Chapter Four

Jordan’s life

“Come on! Harder boy, concentrate. No, no, no Master! You got this right yesterday, why not now? Are you being forgetful? Oh master!”

Jordan looked at him. ‘Is he gay?’ he thought to himself.

“No I’m not forgetful are you?”

“No cheek Master or no break for you! Though why can’t you remember? We only did this yesterday.”

“It’s just.... love.”

“Love? What do you mean....? Oh Master thank you!”

‘Yep definitely gay’ Jordan said to him himself.

“What? No not you. I mean a girl.”
“Oh, seen a lady? The one who you danced with at the ball in the grand hall? Yes she was lovely! I hear her mother is trying to get you to marry her.”

“What? No, no not her. I meant the servant downstairs.”

“Miss Marple? Good grief boy! I think she is interested in older gentlemen.”

“No that’s not what I mean. You know what? It doesn’t matter.”

“Oh. Well. Congratulations on the love Master.”He left Jordan to get on with is work.

 “Come in.” said Jordan.

“Hi Jordan.”

He looked up and saw Tina standing there.

“Hi Tina, what do you want?”

“I just. I just wanted. To tell you something.”

“Yeah?”

Tina leant forward, placed her hands on his face. He stood up and tied his arms around her waist. As they leant towards each other, he sprang away.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, it’s just when I put the quill in my pocket so I could put my arms round you, well now it’s digging into me.”

“Oh”, giggled Tina. She reached into his pocket and threw the quill on the desk. Then they leant in and had the most romantic kiss you could dream of....

And then Tina woke up.

Chapter Five

The Truth

“That will do for today. I will go and instruct Miss Marple to get dinner started. You may go.”

With that Jordan raced off in search of Tina, and found her in the kitchen.

“Come with me.” Said Jordan, and he grabbed Tina’s hand.

“Where are we going?”

“Somewhere quiet to think.”

They stepped into the dimly lit chapel.

“So how are we going to...”Tina began but Jordan interrupted her.

“I’ve wanted to tell you this for a long time and every time I try, something gets in the way, like Mrs Maple saying “Be quiet” or going back in time, and now I’m just going to say it. Tina, I lov....

“Shhhh!”

They turned around and saw a monk stepping out of shadows.

“Sorry” said Jordan.

He took Tina outside, but didn’t expect to see Mrs Maple standing there.

“Take those clothes off now. Dress up was an hour ago.”

She walked off down a corridor.

“What the...?” They turned around, and the door that they had just stepped out of, was the toilet door. The chapel had disappeared.

“Well we don’t have to think about what to do now.” Said Jordan.

“I think we do.” Said Tina holding his hand.

She turned to face Jordan and took a step nearer. “You were saying?”
