PROLOGUE

Nine year old Clarey caught the ball in her hand and ran swiftly across the field. Her dark brown hair was braided into pig tails and was wearing a dark grey ball cap. She was wearing a loose black shirt with a white skull printed on the front and ripped faded jeans that made her look so much like a boy.

"Almost there, CJ - don't give up now." she muttered under her breath, as she was nearing touchdown a boy suddenly tackled her and they both rolled over the muddy grass.

"Get off me, you jerk!" Clarey cried, she pushed away the long dark haired boy away from her.

The boy stood up and just laughed. "Ha! you weren't supposed to play with us boys anyway!"

Clarey made a face at the boy and started to wipe away the grass stains. He just shook his head.

"If you don't want to be tackled, then don't play football!" he yelled.

"You're such an a*s, Evan!" she wiped her tears away. The other kids came running up to them.

"Oh, am I? Why don't you just shoo yourself away and play with your barbie dolls,"

The blonde boy, Lance Milliken heard what Evan had said and decided to tease Clarey as well.

"Yeah, go home, CJ! You're such a tomboy!" he shook his head, "Go home and play with your dolls!" he laughed and Evan gave him a high five.

The next blonde haired boy, Trevor came running up behind them and helped Clarey to her feet. "You okay?"

Clarey who was as red as a tomato was still wiping her tears away, she tugged her arm away from the boy.

"Leave her alone, guys." Trevor commanded.

"Oh, shut up, McAllister!" Lance snapped back. Trevor pushed him hard and he fell hard on the grass. His face furious, he quickly stood up and started to wrestle and punch Trevor.

An older and taller dark haired boy came running up to them and tried separating the two. They stopped and began to glare at each other. Trevor had blood in his nose, he wiped it away with his left hand. Lance just grinned.

"Both of you, knock it off!" Calvin boomed. It was Clarey's older brother. Behind him was her younger brother Caleb who was seven.

Everyone was quiet for awhile when a black limousine drove up to the curb. An older lady came out, she was wearing a peach colored tweed suit. She had red lipstick on and white gloves. She was very pretty with straight black hair. Evan recognized her.

"It's my aunt." he mumbled. He ran towards her. After a few minutes they saw her kneel down and hug Evan. They all looked at each other cluelessly. Evan and his aunt slowly went inside the limo and it roared away from the field.

"Mom, is Evan moving away?" Clarey peeked through the window. There was a big truck outside Evan's home. furnitures were being moved out by the movers. She didn't see a sign of Evan anywhere.

"Well, Evan's moving out to live with his aunt in London." her mom explained. She was cutting some collard greens. She glanced at her daughter.

"Well, I'm glad." Clarey said as she let go of the curtain.

"Clarey." she said softly. She stopped cutting. Wiped her hands off a towel and went over to Clarey's side and placed her hand on her shoulder.

"That's not nice. This is a crucial time for Evan, you know that, right?" she sighed.

She stroked her daughter's braided hair. Clarey pulled the curtain again to the side. Her face was sad.

A tiny tear escaped her eye.
