tell me pretty things

tell me pretty things

A Poem by k.m.b.

Don’t compliment my appearance

Do not tell me that I am pretty
Do not tell me I’ve got the most beautiful eyes

Don’t

Those words mean nothing
Full of emptiness

How superficial you make me feel, telling me those things

Don’t you realize there is more to me than what meets the eye?

I am not just skin and bone
I am heart and soul

If you wish to make me feel good
If you wish to see that beautiful smile

Tell me that you love the words that I write
Tell me that I am one of the most authentic individuals you have ever met
Tell me that I have an incredible sense of humor

Do not fall in love with this flesh and bone
Fall in love with this heart
And this soul

When I first meet a woman how could I know her soul? I only see the pretty outside and pray that the inside will be exponentially more lovely. I did enjoy the poem but my feeling is that love enters through the eyes and SEEKS out the soul. It would be a shame if someone couldn't be beautiful both inside and out! The difference may be WHY they tell you those things...Is it because those things are true or because they want to catch you off guard and steal something from you surreptitiously? Anyway, we are discussing poetry not our views on love. Made me sad to read this but it was strong, clear, and well thought out poetry...Great job!!
