Almost Winter

Almost Winter

A Poem by Kathy Van Kurin
"

How does the approach of winter speak to your life?

"

Almost winter

Almost winter coldness beckons. Winter extends her hand,

Pent-up Wails will be subdued no longer for it is coming, the blast of fury

Frosty winds will twirl to the dawn.  Above cloud banks accumulate.

But for now moments of placated calmness pass in submission.

Sparkling sweet memories remain. We walked the sands glory.

We were embraced by a crown of glittering cerulean ocean waves.

Our toes felt the beach’s embrace with each warm grain of sand.

Spring was our love. Tulips and budding flowers had their way.

Only for awhile: Were we lulled to sleep within the dream?

Even autumn was gentle. Her multi amber tear drops fell in gradual chill.

Nights grew cold, Mornings too. My garden tomato leaves curling.

Make ready. Prepare. Nothing stays the same.

Rise and fall of winds swell between rain showers: Are we listening?

The seasons, always changing, moments of unbelievable beauty, dazzle.

Our souls hold each imprint of yesterday.

Time and again like a short visit to a holiday location

A place of true belonging we never wanted to leave.

It feels like a forever song pulling the heart.

Clues within brief wonders tell of true home.

Is Heaven speaking somehow?

What does this life long for, this heart feel?

There is a stirring within every nuance of nature’s charm.

Lord God Almighty I am listening!

Oh, here I am reading about winter with summer tip-toing up our garden path. My gladiolus are a foot tall and waiting the June sun to bloom. But I feel both positive and negative sensations from the author on Winter's arrival in the piece; much like my own response. I'm a child of December and Christmas is my favorite season but the cold weather still makes my old bones ache. I wonder if I'll ever see a white Christmas. It snowed on my birthday one year and it seemed like such a special blessing. Perhaps I wouldn't love the warmer months so much if my arthritis and bursitis didn't remind me why every winter. I enjoyed the read.

How the seasons have a period of rest before rejuvenation although summer is getting too hot for my liking. I do love autumn and winter rains. Lovely imagery Kathy.

Hi Kathy: vivid imagery splashes all over this stunning poem about changing of the seasons and not wanting them to change because each one is so unique.... listen to the leaves rustling, the birds chirping, the wind sweeping across the plains... listen carefully and you will remember each one and each one will have something special, a new inspiration....appreciate each season, breathe in all that you can and keep it close to your heart...

(Make ready. Prepare. Nothing stays the same.) Ah yes...as Emerson wrote...Nothing is permanent but change. You've written of it well. ~Sharon

Beautiful imagery in this one. But for all the beauties noted for each season, we are reminded they are not here to stay. "Nothing stays the same" is the most important line in the poem. Perhaps we should apply this wisdom to our own lives and the things we value. Appreciate them while they're here and be ready to let them go when the time comes.

Welcome friend 😊
The seasons never seem to last long enough. Just when you're getting comfortable with one, the next rolls around, whether you're ready or not! And although nothing might last forever, perhaps the most important piece of who we are does: the love we share with one another. Thanks for sharing your poetry :)
