A Story by Kate Wing

“We have got to lay down some ground rules. Either of us can call quits and that’s it, it’s all over red rover.” She stated precisely while toying with the charms attached to her phone.

“I believed that to be a given.” He muttered.

“I was just making it clear. I have been in this situation before and they always want to drag it on, make it legitimate, find out what went wrong.” She quietly replied, her mind was starting to haze over with memories that were better left untouched. “I always thought it was obvious what went wrong. One of us was already in a relationship with another person.”

“Are you sure you want to do this?” He queried, he tried to see her facial expression. He hoped to catch just a glance of the thoughts and emotions that were racing through her mind. He had no such luck; she was closed, locked up tight, as cold as ice.

“I want to do this, I’m not sure. All I know is that my Jiminy Cricket has gone on holidays, so just about everything seems like a good idea.” She looked up, concern was clearly written across her face but a weak smile shined through.

“I need a definite answer, I need your permission. This is a choice we both need to make, not just one of us.” It was obvious that this meant a lot to him, as it should have. What they were talking about doing was a big deal, it should have meant a lot to her too. It probably would have if she had been in the right state of mind, if she had her Jiminy Cricket.

She reached over and pulled him closer. Their lips touch and for a time they were free from the world, just held in each others embrace. An innocent onlooker would have thought that they were a newly formed couple without a care in the world. The onlooker would have been half right. They were a newly formed couple but they had plenty to care about. She for one had a boyfriend of three years to worry about, they both also had friends that would murder them for their stupidity if they found out.

“Was that a definite enough answer for you? Come on now, we’re late for lunch.” Then without looking back she grabbed her stuff and walked away.
