Ill Fated Words

Ill Fated Words

A Story by Kate Wing

I love you.
Three little words. Individually they are pointless, together they have strength and power. They cause great joy but also cause terrible grief. They can send you to the moon or screaming into hell. For three little words they can do so much. They are whispered, spoken, shouted and often abused. They can be spoken with complete sincerity or utter deceit.

You may ask how they can hurt. I know all the stories about how love will prevail, well it isn’t always true. Love isn’t always true and if it is, it doesn’t always win.

I have heard these ill fated words from four different guys. Each time it was spoken in a different manner and each time it provoked a different emotion from me.

The first time it was spoken with complete honesty. There was trust and caring behind those words and all it provoked was caution and joy from me.

The second time it was spoken in jest that covered deeper emotions. There was laughter in his voice but longing in his heart. Like always the response to laughter is always more laughter.

The third time it was whispered with deceit and was masked by desire. There was confusion and uncertainty so a reply of kind was whispered to a silent room with tears running down gentle cheeks.

The fourth time it was spoken with his arms around me. There was surprise and disbelief written clearly across my face as I pulled myself further into his arms.

These ill fated words may be spoken with the best considerations or the worst intentions. No matter the means, the outcome is always the same. Pain, torment, uncertainty, disbelief, betrayal.
