Torment

Torment

A Story by Kate Wing

She sat there looking at him. She liked him, maybe even loved him, she knew that but she wasn’t ready for it. The timing was wrong, she couldn’t cope. He was going, moving to another town. He had assured her their relationship could continue. She strongly doubted it. She was only sixteen; she already had a lot to worry about. She needed someone who was there for her when he was needed. He couldn’t do that if he was in another town, half way across the state. She would grow to hate him for it. She had to end it now while the pain would be minimal. She knew it was for the best but still she couldn’t bring herself to do it. It would hurt too much; he would try to convince her it would work. She wouldn’t give him the opportunity. Quick and painful like a band-aid. She had decided, the quicker it was done the faster they both could get over it.

She looked at him one last time. “Chris, I have something to tell you.” She said hoping that none of her emotions were present in her voice. He looked at her and she continued, “It is over between us, it just isn’t going to work.” She quickly rose to her feet. She looked at him and found he was still processing what she had said.

She took her opportunity; if she wasn’t there he couldn’t convince her to change her mind. She turned her back on him and walked away. She could feel tears running down her cheek. Then she heard it, his footsteps. He was trying to follow her. She couldn’t let him. It had to be this way, it had to. She started to walk faster. She heard his footsteps slow and suddenly stop. She longed to look back, she longed to turn back, but she couldn’t. It had to be this way, it had to.
