BlindnessA Story by Kate Wing
She sat at a desk. The tears clung to her eyelashes and blurred her vision. She couldn’t believe it, her life was over. Dave had ended their relationship or as he had put it ‘dumped her’. He was the first guy that had ever liked her. He was the only guy that would ever look at her. Now she was doomed to live and die alone.
She heard footsteps approaching. She knew that they would just continue past the door. They wouldn’t stop. No one ever stopped for her. The footsteps stopped, Paul had entered the room. He quietly walked over to her. He gently sat next to her.
“Kate, don’t cry.” She heard him sympathise. She tried to obey but she just couldn’t.
“He isn’t worth it. Dave doesn’t know what he has lost.” He tried to explain. She was sure Dave knew what he had lost, that was why he had gotten rid of it.
“No one else will look at me. No one else will want me.” She sobbed, new tears streaming down her cheeks.
“Plenty of people will look at you. Plenty of people will want you.” Paul said confidently. “I look at you. I want you.” He softly whispered.
“Don’t.” she stated forcefully.
“What?” Paul questioned.
“Don’t lie to make me feel better.” She muttered as she lowered her head to the desk.
“I’m not lying. I really like you, Kate. I think Dave is a fool.” Paul explained.
“I said ‘Don’t’ Paul. I mean it. Don’t” The anger was flaring up in her voice.
“I’m not.” Paul muttered as he stood up. Kate didn’t say another word. She didn’t raise her head from the desk. Paul left the room. Kate didn’t even look up as his footsteps faded away. She just sat there dwelling on how she was going to live and end her life alone.
