It’s the shocking sorrow and heartbreaking news
as we hear someone else
close to home
dies from COVID 19
Hopefully we will all
now start to
pay attention
to the reality of our
present situation
and we will all start
caring much more
than we did before.
As the whole world has
gone into lockdown
millions of people will
be hit financially
shops, restaurants
and small businesses
they will have it bad
as uncertain times
ahead make it even
more heart
wrenchingly Sad .
This uncertainty
not knowing
is the worst
the uncertainty
of what follows
it might be alright
for those who have
plenty of wealth
they won’t feel
the penny pinching
punch as much
as others will.
Let’s hope and pray
this epidemic ends
sooner rather than later
as a lot of people could
end up homeless
as well as jobless .
This pandemic affects
all of us
from across the equator
it doesn’t discriminate
our size nationality
health or wealth .
As I remember this
is happening now
as I become acutely
aware of all I have
ever taken for granted
as I watch our streets
come to a standstill.
Please stay safe folks
Cause if you haven’t
got your health
then what good
is your wealth.
This is a straightforward expression of how the average person views this. You do a good job of covering all the bases on how many different ways people will be impacted, starting with dying from the virus & going thru the various ways tons of people will be financially devastated. I would've liked to see a little more detail here, like how exactly are these financial hardships born, like how the average pensioner cannot afford $3 per roll for TP or how there's no money until next payday, but we need to order & pay for things that will not become available for another week or two. If you don't have the money to buy ahead, you can't queue up for the things needed. These are the kinds of details that help bring a crisis to life . . . more vivid than a general statement of hardship. But to get to that level of detail & also cover all the territory you covered, this poem would be a mile long! All in all, the most relatable & compassionate poem I've read about this so far (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I adore your work Katrina. There is no hide and seek game to speak the truth.Let's embrace the reality.
Peoples' sufferings must not be the matter of trading. We denounce those who show inhumanity even in such humanitarian crisis across the world.COVID-19 defied borders and ugly power figures.Let a new humanitarian world emerge from the threat of this pandemic.

Yes, this quarantine has highlighted all we have to be thankful for. We are in our homes with food and with electricity and running water. We are talking to neighbors....even while we stay more than 6 feet apart. It is true, the effects of the pandemic are far-reaching and the economic impact scars our world will take a long time to heal. A dark write, but one that is truthful. Lydi**
I really loved this thoughtful and caring poem. What a tragedy to befall the world! The toll it’s taking in terms of human lives and resources is agonising. You concluded the poem with great wisdom too. Of what use is our wealth to us if we lose our health! I hope and pray we get over all of it soon. Please say safe in this pandemic.

Rania thank-you I appreciate your insightful review! Stay safe and we'll
Kind regards Katrina
i agree with Margie .. straight forward and compassionate .. as well as a plea for all of us to live selflessly and keep each other as well as ourselves as clear from spreading it as we can ... i agree .. the huge lesson is how tenuous and fragile our strength really is ... in a flash we have almost a Martial Law thing going on ... that's scary too ..but this is a virus that comes from a family (coronovirus) whose members have come and gone for centuries .. its a more virulent strain for sure .. and pretty much is its worst for those past 60-65 .. who ... are more susceptible to everything anyway .. common sense will keep its spread down and time will give us a victory once again ... i am fortunate to live in the USA where our Federal Government has responded vigorously, in my opinion ... supporting those in highest need as much as can be afforded ... you be healthy too Katrina ... so nice to be getting to know you a bit more with each poem i read! :)

Katrina
this hits the mark, especially the part about suddenly appreciating all we just ordinarily take for granted.
Takes something like this virus to wake us up to how well we have had it, especially when we could be on the verge of losing it all.
