The issue of who
should pay for public education has many sides. One side is that everyone
should pay for their own education since it is their education. If the
government was to pay for everyone’s education then taxes would have to be
raise in order to have enough spending money in both local and federal budgets.
This would mean that more of worker’s paycheck would go to pay for those who
are not working, either because they choose not to work or cannot find a job,
and family budgets would have to be adjusted and what they spend money on cut
back. This would hurt the economy.
Another side is
that the government should pay for public education because it is public not
private. If the government pays for public education, more people would
continue their education that before could not afford it. Even with
scholarships and grants, college is still expensive since not everyone can get
a scholarship or grant. There is just not
enough spending money in the budget right now. Even though taxes would be
raised to help pay for everyone’s education, when the newly educated people
went into the work force they would be able to get better paying jobs than if
they did not go to college.
