Captivity

Captivity

A Poem by Kassandra de Hoyos

I tried writing a poem.

I tried and I tried but it wouldn’t come out.

Poetry is like vomit spread amongst a page.

It’s not really like writing at all.

You’re restricted

By all these stanzas and meters

Not really free

Like an animal in a zoo

A writer in captivity

Standing there for everyone to see

Exposed

Stuck in a cage.

Poetry is where writing goes to die

Like an animal in a zoo

Never knowing its true potential

Never knowing what it could be

I think you'd be surprised to discover that form speaks as much as content. It also separates the great from the mediocre and makes a poet endeavor to make his work even better. It's a struggle but so worth the effort.

Ouch!!! I live for that structure...though I have been writing more free verse lately. One point struck me though and that was the fact that poetry does indeed expose us.....if like me you put some of yourself in everything you write. ( : O )

Ain't it the truth.... I just wrote my first sonnet, have not published it yet. It sucks trying to write to form. I much prefer to write free verse or lyrical works. Your poem will strike a nerve with every poet who stops by to read it. The beauty is in the truth of your words. And you've said it so well.
