'Giving' Love

A poem regarding how love is treated in a relationship.

When one person gives love to another,

And that person returns that love,

we call it romance.

People in a relationship tend to do things

Like kiss, hug, and cuddle,

Thing which could be described as having

A transfer of love.

And when people are unable to 'give' love

To their partner,

It hurts their relationship,

When it should not.

Because a relationship is not

Based on the concept of 'giving' love,

It is based on the concept

Of having love.

Love which you produce yourself,

For your partner.

And yet we continue

To base our romantic relationships

On this 'transfer' of love,

When it hurts them more than it helps them.

And this is because

We've been taught that way,

We see people who claim to be in love,

And we watch them hug, and kiss.

And so when we claim to be in love,

We create the assumption,

That we need to hug, and kiss.

And it kills us,

Because we don't.
