Chapter 10A Chapter by KARWOOThe Place They took the children
The rooms were clean, chrome, shiny, antiseptic.
The kids were placed in small groups in a room that slept three or four. Lori, Lilly and Butterfly all were able to stay together.
Lori and Lilly made such a big fuss over being separated from Butterfly they just put them all in the same room.
Each Day the children were taken and given tests to determine if they had any special abilities other than just the markings on their arms and the eyes had distinctive color changes which they learned rather quickly meant an emotion.
The kids were allowed to go and play in the yard outside. They were fenced in by a very tall fence that had barbed wire over the top.
The kids enjoyed their time outside; they made friends with some other kids. All the kids were afraid of the adults. They took kids to do experiments and some kids never came back.
This boy named Tyson had his sister go into experiment and she never came back yet.
Tyson was Lori’s friend she bullied him because he stopped talking or only whispered when he talked. The girls thought that their parents came and got them until Tyson’s sister didn’t come back.
This particular morning a squirrely man and a very starched husky woman took Lori and Lilly to the experimentation. When they got to the lab the man grabbed a wand. He waved the wand around the girls and their marks appeared and disappeared. Lilly whispered.
“Cool”
Lilly arms were a little different that Lori’s they slightly showed markings but on her neck her markings were very vibrant and her eyes were very bright.
Lori started a commotion all of a sudden. She was scared and started to cry in a shrilly shriek noise.
“I want my Mom and Daaaaaad!”
She repeated it over and over again and stomped and flailed her arm around. It was so distracting that the squirrely man became agitated and unfocused on his task. He muttered something under his breath and made a phone call.
The large marmish woman appeared and escorted the girls back to their room.
When the door was closed and firmly locked Lilly slyly goes over to her bed and produces the wand that made their markings disappear.
Butterfly was watching the little show of sneakiness Lilly was showing her, with her little grin of accomplishment.
“Lilly what is that?” questioned Butterfly
Lori answered for her.
“Oh it’s ok that man was playing with it. It makes our marks go away and come back.” Butterfly questioned again.
“Are you supposed to have that?”
“I don’t know.” Lilly say shyly
“Lilly you know you are not suppose to take things, remember what mom said? You are going to get into trouble next time.” Lori tattled
Lilly spat back. “Oh yeah? Well mom’s not here who you gonna tell that gross man?”
Lori thought for a moment and slowly said, “No”
Butterfly just looked in disbelief as she realized Lilly’s talent of thievery.
“Let me see that” Butterfly walked to Lilly
Lilly handed the wand to her and took it and waved it around her markings and nothing happened.
Lori grabbed it and said “No like this!”
Lori had paid close attention. She loves gadgets. She turned the end and pulled the top and then she waved it over Butterfly’s arms and her markings disappeared she then pushed the top and turned the end the other way and she waved it again and her markings reappeared.
Butterfly smiled, she had to find a way to escape now. She is going to take the girls and find their mother and they were going to blend back into society somehow.
First of all they had to get out of there.
The children were allowed outside a short time later to play. The girls mostly stayed together but they wandered around and played a little with some other kids. Butterfly saw a boy about her age and she flirted with him a bit.
Tyson was by himself and Lilly wanted him to be happy so she went over to him and tried to talk to him. He just turned away with his arm folded in a pouting manner.
Lilly giggled,
“You did that just like a girl!”
Tyson turned and in the same pouting manner
“You shut up you dummy!”
Lilly came up to Tyson and gave him a quick hug then promptly pushed him down.
Tyson smiled slightly and then he started to cry. His arms were folded and he ducked his head in-between his arms then smeared a greasy booger on his sleeve.
“What’s wrong?” Asked Lilly, “Did I hurt you? I’m sorry!” She looked concerned
Tyson whimpered, “My sister went to the experiment room and never came back and now I don’t want to go to the experiment room again. Maybe I won’t come back. I want my sister!”
Lilly grabbed Tyson’s hand and whispered in his ear. He calmed down.
The kids continued to play. They started to run. They ran to the fence then like a fenced in animal running along the fence line.
At the far end of the field the fence was a little overgrown with weeds. There were morning glories growing and interweaving with the chain link fence. I was pretty. The girls started to pick the flowers even though they had started to close for the day.
Lilly was putting the blooms in Tyson’s hair. He kept slapping her hand every time she put them on him and she would taunt him saying “you’re a girl.” Then she would giggle.
Butterfly was bored so she started pulling the greenery off of the fence. She would hear a clinking noise each time she pulled but it wasn’t a light clink like the fence would make but a heavy noise like a larger piece of metal against another large piece. She moved towards the noise and found a gate. It had chain around it with a big metal lock on it.
She pulled on it to see if it was locked securely. It just made a low clank from her jerking on it.
Curiously the kids arced around Butterfly. Tyson whispered, “If we had a small piece of metal, I think I can open it.”
Lilly beamed at that statement, “I know I can open it!”
“Let’s have a treasure hunt and the one who finds something wins!”
Hooted Lori
Butterfly just shook her head and sat on the grass and ran her hands through the grass. She had to figure out what they were going to do when they got through the gate. What would they bring and who would go with them.
A short while had passed.
Lori Squealed. ‘I found something!”
She produced a think piece of metal. Who knows what it was from? Who cares! Tyson ran up took the piece of metal from her then pushed her and ran to the partially covered fence. The girls made a semi circle by Tyson to cover him. They played Rock, Paper, Scissors, to hide him.
Tyson worked on the fence for quite a long time. Every now and then he would make a “hmm” sound or sigh the he spouted, “Yes!”
The girls turned around to see the lock was indeed unlatched. They covered the evidence with the greenery that had covered it before. Lilly managed to get a hold of the lock and she hid it like all the other treasures she came across.
Butterfly’s mind was racing now. Should she grab this small group and just run or should she grab something to take with them? She decided it would be best if they wait until the next time they are allowed out to play. To fill their back packs with things to help them along the way. She didn’t know what to expect beyond the gate.
The experiment people started to round up the kids and bring them in. They were made to line up in groups as if they were in school coming back from recess.
When they got back to their room they put their things in the back packs that were assigned to them when they were given spare clothes to wear. They put their change of clothes and the few things that they were given when they got there. The handy wand was placed in Lilly’s bag and the lock as well.
Little did they know that they were being monitored when they had the picked the lock at the fence.
It couldn’t have been that easy of an escape. It wasn’t..
