Red Vein:4A Chapter by karmic
“Is that all miss?” The store owner asked, as he placed the items into a paper bag. “Yup” Barrage nodded, while taking an apple out of the bag; she smiled at her reflection in the apple and took a bite. The store owner noticed the dagger hanging from Barrage’s belt. “Hey are you a hunter or something” he asked. “Um yea something like that. Hey how much are those grapes” Barrage quickly tried to change the subject. “Seventy five cents” the man answered. “Great I’ll take those too” she yelled happily, while throwing a few coins onto the counter and grabbed the grapes. “Thank you” Barrage called out; she ran out the store and turned down an alley. “How’d it go?” a voice came from above her. “Hah. He asked if I were a hunter” she sighed. Barrage looked up at Gauge who was lying down on a fence. “I told you to stop wearing that thing on your belt” Gauge yawned. Gauge looked like he was in his late twenties, but was really thirty seven. “I know, but it looks cute on my belt” Barrage protested. Barrage pulled her shirt over the dagger. “Whatever” Gauge scratched his stomach. “Your always so lazy” Barrage huffed; she took another bite out of the apple. Barrage then lifted the apple over her head; Gauge looked down towards the apple and sunk his fangs into it. “I won’t be able to live off of this forever” Gauge’s eyes turned red then back to normal. “I know. I would offer my blood, but- I could never take your blood and you know that” Gauge interrupted. “Yea” Barrage whispered. Gauge jumped off the fence and landed next to Barrage. “I have to go” Gauge said. “Let me come with you” Barrage whimpered. “Just don’t get in my way. You know how I get when I’m hungry” Gauge groaned, while walking away. Barrage quickly followed behind him. Flare waited at the school’s front gate for “He is not coming” “He is. He has to” Flare muttered. “I’m sorry” “Reese can’t be gone” Flare cried out. “Reese no” she shouted. Flare turned and ran to “Who did it? Who killed my brother” Flare yelled; her hair covered her eyes again. “What would you do if I told you?” “Please just tell me” Flare cried out. “Vampires” he muttered. “So this is a free period for us?” Vera asked, as she walked next to Clage. “Yea. Most of the hunters have class at this time” Clage explained. “Oh” Vera looked at the flowers surrounding them. “So is that girl your girlfriend?” Vera questioned. “Huh. What girl?” Clage quickly asked. “The girl you were with this mourning. I saw that you almost bit her” Vera shrugged. “Was she spying on me?” Clage mumbled. “You still didn’t answer” Vera groaned. “No we are just friend” Clage exclaimed. “Oh” Vera picked a flower and pulled off the pedals. “Vera I wanted to ask you something. Why don’t my fangs show like regular vampires?” Clage asked. “It’s probably because you absorbed so much of my blood. Only purebloods can hide their fangs” Vera explained, as they entered the student dorm building. They stopped at Vera’s room door; Vera unlocked her room door. Clage felt quick heart beats coming from the other side of the door. Clage pushed Vera out of the way. The door sprung open and a bald man poked his head out into the hallway. “I found you Vera” the man laughed, as he exposed his fangs. “How did a vampire get into the school” Clage muttered. “Clage take the new girl and get out of the way” Maes directed. Clage watched as Maes causally walked down the hall. Clage nodded his head and grabbed Vera’s arm. Clage pulled her down the hall. “I don’t know how you got past the gate, but now your going to wish you were back on the other side of it” Maes unsheathed his sword. The vampire swung at Maes, but he ducked. The vampire then kicked Maes in the face. Maes fell backwards; he finally caught his balance. Maes was bleeding from his lip. “When I’m done with you. Your blood is mine” the vampire hissed. “I doubt that” Maes said; Maes stabbed the vampire in the stomach and rammed him into the wall. The vampire scratched him on the cheek. Maes pulled his out of the vampire’s chest and stabbed it in the throat. “Seems like someone is getting a little clumsy in killing a vampire without getting hurt” Glen observed. “Nah. I thought it would be better if he at least get a few hits off of me. If not it would be boring” Maes pulled his sword out of the vampire’s throat. “I’ll tell the principle to block off this hall way” Glen looked at the dead vampire. “How do you think it got in here?” Glen asked. “I don’t know. Who is watching the gate?” Maes questioned. Maes peeked his head into Vera’s room. It should be David and Dante sir” Glen replied. “Hm” Maes groaned. “What is it?” Glen looked into the room. “Nothing. It’s just that I missed lunch” Maes cried out. “Hah is this really the time to be thinking about food. For a third year hunter you sure act like a child” Glen barked, while walking away. “Good I needed him to leave. The real question that comes to my head is why was the vampire in the new girl’s room? I let that vampire hit me so I could see how strong he was. That vampire was no random vampire off the streets; he was trained. I want to cover this investigation on my own” Maes thought. Clage opened the school’s roof door; the bright sun shot into his eyes as he ran through it with Vera behind him. Clage stopped and took a deep breath. “How did that vampire get into the school” Clage panted. “I don’t know. I didn’t think they would have found me so soon” Vera replied; she looked down and saw that Clage was still holding her hand. Vera could feel him shaking from fear. “Maybe he is not cut out for this” Vera thought. Clage let her hand go, and broke her train of thought. Clage walked over to the railing and looked off the roof. Clage took another deep breath, and then stood silent. “Hey you don’t- You need help don’t you?” Clage interrupted. Clage paused for a moment and shook his head. “Someone might call me a fool for this, but you’re connected to my past for some reason. I want to know what happened back then. I want to know who killed my family” Clage muttered the last part. “Are you saying that you will” Vera paused so she could make sure she was getting this right. “Yea. For the sake of my memory I will help you” Clage said. Clage eyes sprung red; his fangs grew longer. “What the hell?” Clage yelled. “Don’t worry your just hungry” Vera explained, as she walked closer to him. Vera hugged Clage and closed her eyes. “Here take some” she whispered. Clage was shocked by what she had said, but his hunger drew him closer to her neck until his fangs sunk into her skin. After getting a few drops Clage sunk his teeth even further in. Vera gasped for air; her eyes turned bright red. Clage could see Vera’s memories, but most of it was blocked off. Clage released himself from her neck. Vera looked up at him while holding on to her neck. “You saw it didn’t you? The blocked point in my memories” Vera’s blood ran down her arm. “Yea I did see it. It’s blocked at the time of ten years ago. The time I went into a coma and lost my memories” Clage wiped the blood residue off his lips. “Ten years ago when the war began” Clage thought. Gauge threw the dead corpse onto the ground after drinking its blood; he heard footsteps coming from behind him. “I don’t want any trouble” Gauge yawned. “Did you kill my brother? No that question doesn’t even matter. You’re still one of them. So you will die like all vampires” Flare barked.
