INCIDENT THAT CHANGED PERSPECTIVE

INCIDENT THAT CHANGED PERSPECTIVE

A Chapter by Karan Aatre

"Hi,Lizzy?",i asked the person on the other end of the call.It was her mother,i guess,
looked like she expected the call. She gave the phone to Lizzy straightaway.
"Hi,who's this?"
"Lizzy,it's me Daniel.You ready?",i asked her.
"Yes",she replied back.
It took me 3 months to ask her out for a dinner.
I took my father's car. There she was waiting outside her house.
She looked beautiful as always.
"You are looking beautiful",the first line i said.
"Looks like you were practicing this line all your way through",she said smiling.
Well,Lizzy had a nice sense of humor,at least better than me.But,the fact was that i had been practicing that line all my way through.I am not good at complimenting someone, especially the opposite gender.
We went to a decent place.Sat there for about an hour, chatted about the city, novels, life.
We stood up to leave.I started walking towards the exit.Suddenly,i heard as if someone had fallen down.Turned around to see that Lizzy had collapsed. For the first few second,i couldn't move.I tried to shout her name but wasn't able to shout.
I ran towards her.
I lifted Lizzy in my arms and with the help of other people i laid her in the back of my car.
We straightaway drove to the hospital,i called her parents.
For the next 24 hours she was monitored.Doctors told test reports will be out in few more hours which would provide a better insight to what was the reason.
It took another 12 hours before we could see her.
Reports said Lizzy suffered from a terminal disease. She might be able to live only a couple of years.
Her parents could not stop crying in the lobby, but, in front of her they were all positive, hopeful. That's how parents are.
I went inside the room.Lizzy was awake. She was asleep for the most of the past 36 hours.Medication shows it's effect after all.
I didn't know what to say.I was sitting quietly alongside her.
"You know Daniel",she said, but her voice was not clear though,
"yeah Lizzy?", i replied.
"I used to watch my friends play as a child",she said
"I couldn't,my legs were too weak",she continued
"I never asked God why am i not able to do what other kids do"
"I also wanted to jump, run around the streets like my friends"
"You know my friends used to cycle around the town when it used to rain. They used to say that it felt heavenly,i mean you cycling and rain drops hitting your face"
"I wanted to do that"
"But i wasn't able to"
"I never asked God,"why?""
"I never asked him,"why me?""
"Why is he so cruel to me then"
Tear Drops rolled down from the side's of her eyes.
I was able to hold back my tears somehow.
"or when it used to snow,i wanted to run around like my friends throwing snow balls at each other's face"
"I only used to look at them playing from my house"
"I never asked why",and she broke down.
I hugged her,my arms were across her body. This time i couldn't stop myself from crying.
We were like that for few minutes before her parents came inside the room.
It was one of the longest nights of my life.Knowing that the love of your life is going to die,i had never felt a pain like that.
