When 1 Becomes 2A Poem by P. KapperWhat happens when happily ever after fades away. What becomes of two people after the marriage ends....When 1 Becomes 2 We once looked at each other and said “I do” We didn’t We once stood at the altar and said “I will” We wouldn’t We once dreamt of forever It wasn’t We thought we’d always be happy We weren’t We were only nineteen Fresh out of high school How were we to know That we would both end up the fool We wanted different things Had different plans, different dreams How hard can it be for us To look like a love from the movie screen We had a child and Another on the way But the skies in our perfect world Had already begun to turn to grey We never knew how to communicate How to be a friend How to keep the love alive We had broken hearts we could not mend The lonely nights, the silent fights Living just by cohabitation We ruined our twenties It was a separation born of procrastination Before we knew it We were in our mid thirties We never would find happiness Just hurt feelings and anxieties Then one day it all blew up The end, it seemed, had taken shape I made a huge mistake We used it as our great escape Bitter with the act Upset with the result After several nights of talk We learned we were both at fault So with a twist of fate We found communication we’d never before had We both admitted to the other That long ago our marriage had gone bad So we both decided the time was right And finally untied the knot And by loosening up the laces The pressure had released a lot And it’s funny how things work Once you swallow your pride We each found a friend A friend for whom we could confide It’s been a year plus since Our marriage had run its course And we’ve discovered that we found We’re best friends for better or worse And we’ll move on in our own time Become the change we want to see One thing that will never change Our friendship will keep us family And I wish you the very best For today and every day And no matter where the winds may take you My friendship will always stay
