Like We Never Had a Broken Heart

Like We Never Had a Broken Heart

A Poem by P. Kapper

I’ve got my skeletons

Too many to count

No room left in the closet

For a jacket or a hat

I know you’ve got yours

They’ve piled up over the years

Thrown in with sweat and tears

I’m not asking for

You to open up Pandora’s box

All I’m asking for

Is a chance…

You’ve had heartaches

And scars and burns to show

My life has been in shambles

My heart has been crushed

So tonight let’s close the door

And forget the world outside

Let’s look into each other’s eyes

And hold each other tight

Starting tonight

Let’s fall in love

Like we never had a broken heart

We can’t change the past

We can’t undo the hurt

We can’t erase our regrets

So let’s take this night

Wrap ourselves in each other

Together let’s turn off the light

And maybe we can find a way

When the morning sun rises

To forget we ever had a broken heart

Because love can be a scary place

We’ve both been there

When it all fell apart

And we’ve tried to pick up the pieces

But they never seem to fit

We’ve held on to nothing

Hoping to find something

But when the dust settled

All we were left with

Was another failed fling

And we’ve both given up

On the hope of love everlasting

Can two wrongs make a right?

Can broken hearts stand up and fight?

Through the fire find the flame

Can two hearts down and out

In each other start to mend?

So tonight let’s find the courage

To love without fear

To dry each other’s tears

And shake away the dust

And maybe we can find in one another

That we never had a broken heart
