A Day of Rest

A Day of Rest

A Poem by P. Kapper

A day of rest

Is no such day for me

It’s running around

Errands and games

Laughing with the kids

And yard work and cleaning

And other necessities

But it isn’t with you

You’re nowhere to be found

Except in my heart

And the front of my mind

And each corner of my mouth

I scream out your name

But it’s of no use

You aren’t listening

You can’t hear me

You’re miles away

And surely not alone

Do I ever cross your mind?

Do you think of the nights we spent together?

Or am I just a pawn

In your game of hearts

You tell me your intentions

Your hopes and dreams

Do I fit in those plans?

You know where I stand

There’s no mistaking

I’m strapped in tight

And you are my destination

But what will I find

When I arrive?

A blossoming field?

A shriveling wasteland?

I really don’t care

Just as long as

At the end of the road

At each stop along the way

The one thing I want to see

The only thing

Is you

Next to me

Next to you
