The Toro Incident

The Toro Incident

A Story by Kate Rivet
"

A bull get's loose on Cresswell Campus and Susanna and Jack are the school's last hope

"
"Hey Tom you wanna come hunting with us?" Kate asked Tom. We were all hanging out in the club house and up until now, I was relaxing on the couch listening to music. Hunting has always been a sensitive topic due to the fact that some of us ( Rider and Nick) are hunting nerds.
"Why would you ask him?" Nick asked.
"Why wouldn't I?" Kate asked as I stood up.
"Because Tom will blast the darn birds out of sky!" Rider shouted.
"He makes them all take off!" Nick added.
"Gentlemen, there is no need to shout," I said calmly eyeing them.
"Susanna, do you want to hunting with us?" Kate asked.
"Yeah, that's a great idea!" Nick said with enthusiasm.
"Yeah you should come with us!" Rider added.
"Susanna will feel bad is she doesn't give an animal food, how do you expect her to pull the trigger?" Jack asked.
        "They're just birds!" Nick exclaimed.
"You're just sour towards birds because they steal your lunch," I said.
"They are so sneaky!" Nick shouted. I just face-palmed. Suddenly, the door slammed open and two people came flying in. Dale Press and Chad Freelance.
"You gotta help us!" Dale said in between breaths.
"There's a...." Chad started. He said something we couldn't understand and added, "loose on campus." They both slumped down still out of breath. Kate rushed over and looked at them.
"Get the first aid kit!" She shouted. Rider opened the kit it under the sink and tossed the small box to Jack. Jack then threw it to Kate.
"What's going on?" I asked coming around the counter. That's when I noticed blood coming from Chad's side. Dale had a stream of blood coming from his temple.
"Don't know. Susanna, Jack, go find what caused this. Everyone else, help me move them," Kate said taking command.
"Roger," I said heading towards the back door.
"We'll be back," Jack said following me. We headed out and when we got to the fountain the the middle of the campus I turned to Jack.
"Now how are we suppose to find what hurt Dale and Chad? Did you catch what they said?"
"Something is loose on campus," Jack said shrugging. As we were looking around, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted something and my intuition told me it wasn't good.
"Get down!" I shouted pulling Jack down to the ground. As we were going down, something grazed the top of my head. There was a crash, crunch, and then a splash. Jack and I stood up and saw that it was one of the metal chairs that had come flying towards us. It now lay in the fountain misshapen.
"Geez. Thank's a lot," Jack said rubbing the back of his head.
"Don't mention it," I said becoming wary of our surroundings.
"You don't think someone's out to get us do you?" Jack asked looking around.
"Don't think s-" I was interrupted by an unmistakable snort. Jack and I slowly turned around and found a massive brown bull staring at us. "I think we found the guilty party," I said nervously.
"Okay, okay, stay calm. As long as we don't move he can't see us," Jack said.
"Where in the world did you hear that?" I asked. That set him off. The bull came charging towards us. I pushed Jack out of the way and then dove into the fountain. The bull hit the rim and flew over me. "Alright, come on Jack! I have a plan," I said hopping over the fountain wall. Jack got up and followed me. We ran to the campus stable where they kept the horses.
"What's a bull doing on campus anyway?" I asked.
"Maybe the biology class is dissecting again," Jack answered.
"I hope not," I said as we approached the stables. I jumped over the fence and quickly ran up to a horse that was already saddled, from the equestrian class, and quickly pulled my self up. Jack on the other hand... well he was still climbing over the fence. When he finally got over, he got to another horse and tried to pull himself up. Jack got up onto the saddle but had too much momentum. Right when he got up, he fell right off the other side.
"It takes talent to fail like that," I said sarcastically. Jack groaned and pulled himself up onto the horse, this time actually staying on.
"Let's go," Jack said. We took off and we both grabbed a lasso. What is it western day? Hey I just grabbed what was around.
We road the horses to the heart of campus where we heard the commotion. Jack was sitting in the forest and I was going to chase the bull to him.  The bull caught sight of me and began charging towards me. Okay change of plan, I'll lead the bull to Jack. Why did' I think about that before? Crap, I better bet moving or that bull will catch me.
I entered the wooded area of campus and saw Jack sitting off to the side. Suddenly. My horse jerked sideways and I realized the bull was right next to me. Odd, why didn't he ram us from behind?
Jack had the rope tied to a tree and when we were about to pass him, he threw the rope. He would've been spot on except for fact that it was too high. The rope got caught around my torso and I was left frantically struggling. I got the rope off but then it ran out of slack and tightened around wrist. The only thing I could was prepare my self for the world of hurt I was in for.
The rope yanked me back ripping off my steed. I felt sheering pain in my shoulder and reached out with my other hand. I grabbed the rope and braced myself for the landing. Jack ran up to me and got the rope off my wrist.
"I am so sorry! Are you okay?" Jack asked.
"Yeah come on, we gotta find that bull before it hurts anyone else!"

We walked back to the heart of campus to see the bull surround by some students. When they saw us one of them said, "Susanna, what do we do?"
"I got this," I said getting a lasso ready.
I started running towards the bull. I was waiting for it to start charging and sure enough it did. I moved to the side and timed the throw. The lasso left my hand it found its mark. Before the rope could completely tighten around the bull's leg, I ran around it wrapping the remainder of the rope around its other legs. The bull toppled over and began squirming around.
"Did you catch it?" I heard a feminine voice shout. I turned around and saw our biology teacher, Ms. Rachel run towards us.
"Yeah do you know where he came from?" Jack asked.
"We were going to dissect it. I want to show the students how much muscle a cow has and what better way than using a fresh cow!" Ms. Rachel exclaimed, "since you caught it, would you like to do the honors in killing it?" Ms. Rachel asked handing me an ax.
"Um, okay," I looked at Jack and his eyes widened.
"Don't!" He shouted as I brought the ax down on the ropes binding the bull's legs. It sprung up and was off. In the distance we could hear crashing and screaming.
        "SUSANNA!!!" Everyone shouted.

A fun story that doesn't stray too far from your comforts. You do a pretty good job telling your story mainly through dialogue. Plot and premise are straight forward and honest. Overall it's lighthearted, enjoyable, and complete as a short story.
