The Plan

The Plan

A Story by Kate Rivet
"

At Cresswell Academy, students get to spend their days studying and living a carefree life... is what I'd like to say. Pff that is merely a myth on the chaotic campus. Heroine's up to no good agiain

"
I walked in the door of the clubhouse and was greeted by Taylor, who was lounging around on the couch and Reid, who was sitting at the dining room table snacking on something.
"Hey, how were your classes?" Taylor asked as I walked over to the kitchen.
"Good," said kneeling down and opening one of the bottom cabinets. The boys are up something, something not good and I wanted to make sure I was prepared. I stood up and that's when I saw a huge spider making its way towards me. I screamed alerting Taylor on the couch. He ran over to me and I jumped up into his arms.
"What?" He asked looking at me with concern.
"What do you mean 'what'?! Kill it!" I shouted pointing at the spider.
"Okay, okay, calm down," Taylor said putting me on the counter, "look away it's a big one," Taylor said. I turning my head and heard the sound of him stomping and then a suddenly, something knocked me off the counter. I stood up and looked down at myself. I was covered in a cold green slime-like substance. Taylor was no longer alone, beside him stood Lenny. From behind me, Reid burst out laughing followed by the other two boys. Looking over the counter, I realized the spider was a fake remote control toy. Lenny was holding a slime cannon
"Taylor Mathew Stevens," I shook with anger.
"Oh man, the look on your face," Taylor said between laughs. While they were distracted, I kneeled down and got out my own slime cannon and let loose on the three hooligans. The force of the slime ceased their laughing and caused them to fall. I knew they were going to pull something when one of the cannons went missing. It was only a matter of time.
"Karma hurts doesn't it?" I asked throwing the empty cannon aside. Before they could recover, I grabbed the second hidden weapon which was a very powerful water gun with its own tank and took off. I took my usual escape route which involves me diving through the window. The only problem is I was a little bigger with the water gun strapped to my back. The gun got caught on the top of the window and I crashed down into the flower bed. Wasn't as smooth as I was hoping for but it'll do. I leaped over the gate and took off.
"Get back here!" One of the boys roared. I just chuckled and kept running.
I reached my favorite reading tree and climbed my way to one of the higher branches. A couple minutes later, I heard heavy footsteps under the tree.
"I swear she's always here," I heard Taylor voice. Was he alone?
"Is she in the tree?" Nope, not alone. I heard Lenny's voice.
"Well I ain't gonna check," Reid said. Okay all three of them are here. Joy. The tree shook as someone started climbing it. I sat cross-legged on one of the thicker branches and got the water gun ready, waiting for the head to pop up. And the poor sucker is.... Taylor!
"Hóla," I said. His head slowly turned to face my and he gave me a nervous smile. Then I pounded his face with water causing him to lose his balance and fall out of the tree. Then I swung myself upside down and fired at Lenny and Reid. They both fell down and I took off again.
"Gosh darn it!" Reid shouted in frustration. I ditched the empty water gun and took off to the cafeteria where Kate, Sam, and Rachel were hanging out.
"Hey guys," I greeted sitting down next to Kate.
"Hey, where are your shoes?" Kate asked looking down. Oops I must've taken off so fast I forgot to put them on.
"Must've slipped my mind," I smiled.
"Ew what's all over you?" Sam asked.
"Oh this?" I asked indicating the slime on my uniform.
"Yeah, is that the slime from the class awards?" Rachel asked realizing where it was from. During our class awards, we do something similar to Nickelodeon where the recipient of the given award is slimed.
"Yep, The Three Stooges got me," I said with a groan.
"Taylor, Lenny, and Reid?" Kate asked.
        "Yep," I answered.
"There you are you little brat!" A voice roared over the cafeteria noise. Everyone turned to see Taylor, Lenny, and Reid soaking wet and covered in grass clippings. They made their way toward me and I knew what I had to do.
"Hey guys, what happened to you?" I greeted sarcastically.
        "Very funny," Lenny said.
"You're going down," Reid said lunging at me. I grabbed Kate's mashed potatoes and slammed them into Reid's face and letting him fly past me.
"Oops, sorry, muscle spasm," I said looking down at the fallen Cresswell student.
"Oh you're goin' down," Lenny shouted grabbing a nearby student's tray and hurling it at me. I ducked and on my way down grabbed the tray. As I was spinning around I threw it right back at him.
"Again karma," I said with a sigh. Both boys got up and stood next to Taylor.
"Alright little girl, play time's over," Lenny said cracking his knuckles.
"Who are you calling 'little'?" I asked.
        "You apparently," Taylor said shrugging.
"All bark and no bite," I said with a sigh. Lenny growled and then charged at me. Looking around, I found bowl of gravy on Kate's plate. I grabbed it Nd dumped it on Reid's head. Blinded, he couldn't see where he was going and ran right into Lenny.
"WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON HERE?!" A voice boomed over the intercom. Uh oh, headmaster.
"I don't know about these idiots, but I am just defending myself," I said.
"Don't try that with me little missy, I saw what happened at the clubhouse!" Headmaster's voice shouted.
"There you go! Defense!" I fired back.
"No it wasn't! Sheesh you kids will make my hair turn gray before it's time," Headmaster said with a sigh.
"What do you mean 'before it's time'? You already got gray hairs," I muttered.
"I heard that! Now behave yourself," Headmaster said and then turned off the intercom.
"You heard him, behave yourself boys," I said walking out of the cafeteria.
Later that day, I was hanging out in the clubhouse with Kate when Taylor, Lenny, and Reid came in. "I still have mashed potatoes in my nose," Reid grumbled.
"Serves you right. I did nothing to deserve this," I said innocently.
"Hey since when did you and Reid make up?" Kate asked Lenny.
"Hm, I don't know, I guess we just forgot when we decided to get revenge," Lenny said shrugging and looking at Reid.
"Revenge for what?" I asked. They both glared at me and I took it I did something to make them mad. "Alright, what did I do this time?" I gave in and asked.
"What did you do?!" They both roared. "You and your wisecracking mouth," Reid finished.
"Since when do I have a 'wisecracking mouth'?" I asked looking at Taylor. He winked at me and I smiled back.
"You don't remember?! We were fighting yesterday!" Lenny shouted.

The day before...

"Once and for all, I didn't say that!" Lenny shouted at Reid. These two have been going at it for hours. Apparently Reid overheard Lenny talking about him and took it out of context. For the first hour I tried to calm them down but there was no point, so now I'm just sitting on the couch watching it all go down.
"They haven't stopped have they?" Taylor asked coming out of the bathroom.
"Nope," I said shaking my head, then I added, "man if they put this much effort into work, they'd be bring in the doe."
"Oh yeah? 'Cause I heard you specifically say 'I just can't stand him sometimes'," Reid said.
"You are so stupid!" Lenny shouted.
"And that would be shots fired," I said without looking up from my magazine.
        "Just 'shots fired'," Taylor corrected.
        "Whatever," I retorted.
"I'm stupid? You're the one who's failing in algebra," Reid countered.
"Shots returned," I said getting up. They both glared at me as I made my way over to the refrigerator.
"For your information I am not failing," Lenny said unamused by Reid's insult.
"Oh really? Last time I checked, a D is also considered failing," Reid said with a laugh.
"Actually, I'm getting a B+," Lenny said crossing his arms.
"What?" Taylor, Kate, Reid, and I said utterly shocked.
"Yep. I got an A on the last test so that took it up," Lenny explained.
"My eyes were so wide I think I looked normal for a second," I said. Both Lenny and Reid glared at me again. Unfortunately, knowing me, I just had to keep going despite the two boys practically shooting lasers with their glares, "hey is this how you guys see everyday? I could get used to this!"
"I don't think this is the time to make Asian jokes about yourself," Kate said indicating Lenny and Reid shaking with anger.
"You've done it now," Lenny said.
"It's one thing to be sarcastic but to insult him is too far," Reid said.
"But you just did," I said looking at them.
"It's okay for me to insult him, I'm his boyfriend," Lenny said putting his hand on Reid's shoulder.
"Yuck, way too much PDA," I said making a face.
"That's it, you're dead meat!" Lenny said coming at me. I dodged his attack and leaped through the open window and took off.

Back in the present...
"Oh that, sorry I lost track of how witty I am. It's like counting how many times you exhale. You do it so much there's no point in counting," I said shrugging.
"You are so childish," Lenny said annoyed.
"If I'm childish then what does that make you?" I asked crossing my arms.
"Come on, let's walk around campus. I don't want you starting another war," Taylor said heading towards the door. I followed him out and after we got away from the clubhouse we stopped and sat down on a bench.
        "So?" I asked.
"Oh they're getting along just fine," Taylor said smiling.
        "That's good."
"Yeah, at first I didn't think your plan would work," Taylor said laughing.
"I can't you believe you doubted me," I said smiling. Taylor put his arm around me and brought me closer.
"You are truly an amazing person," Taylor said. I smiled and responded, "so are you. Hey, can we stay like this? Just for a little longer?"
"Sure, I'd love that," Taylor said holding me tighter.

The simple take away about karma leaves the story in a tasteful yet easy going state. Your strengths are clearly establishing lighthearted and playful atmospheres while having your stories told straight forward through heavy, but enjoyable dialogue. Think of weaving in actions (hair flips/body turns/ hand gestures/body gestures) with your dialogue to give it a another element of animation. This sort of addition generally serves to control pacing so that dialogue doesn't feel like it's being fired out like bullets from a machine gun.
