It never lets go of you..

Emptiness

In the darkness of the night,

A strangling force grabs your heart,

It softens, it hurts, it voids. 

It takes your breath,

Makes your gasp for air,

For love,

For life. 

It surrounds your body,

You feel the pull at your fingertips,

You reach for it,

Strive for it,

Live for it,

But in the end, 

It's not there. 

Emptiness.

I see that you have this talent of explaining feelings in a simple way.
for me, emptiness comes in the form of a sick, hollow feeling in my stomach that won't go away no matter what.

My only suggestion is for the third line: "It softens, it hurts, it empties" Perhaps using another word besides "empties" would make it stronger, because the poem is already about emptiness.
