"The Letter "D""

"The Letter "D""

A Poem by Kameron Armitage

The letter “D”.
It can change an entire word.
Take the word “Love” in all of it’s glory.
If you are in Love, you may care more about someone than you ever will for yourself.
Add a simple “D” to that, and now you no longer do.
That feeling simply drifts away into cold nothingness.
And most of the time, all we want to get rid of, is
The letter “D”.

What I like is the idea behind the poem; presenting the letter D as a cruel inducer of the past tense, and a destroyer of the present tense is a charming and witty theme for a poem.

What I dislike is the presentation of the idea, the poem itself. The fact of the matter is that if this writing weren't on this website, and were not explicitly labeled as a "poem," a reader would have no means of looking at this piece of writing and knowing that it was meant to be poetry; it's written as prose, without meter, rhyme, or anything else that a reader might associate with poetry.

What I suggest is that you keep the idea of the poem, but rewrite it entirely. Translate this theme into a new piece, and make it poetic. I sent you a list of literary techniques that may spark some ideas in you.

Keep writing, and keep reading, because I think that you have the potential to write great things, as well as the will, but lack the experience to do so. So, go out and accumulate that experience

PS. Work on your punctuation.

I am glad I read your poem, The Letter D, because it is very true. I enjoyed the idea that when one is in love, your life becomes meaningless compared to the person of your affection, they give you that reason. But once you add that d it's there no longer. As they say when you read a poem you put your own meaning in it, you "make it yours" and I throughly enjoyed the last line. wishing to get rid of the d, to me, strengthens the "will". without the d, for me anyway means also that loveD would never be, to have never "loved".
Defintely keep writing, cuz you make great poems = )
