An Unknown World

An Unknown World

A Poem by Kaitlynn Kelly

There is a world beyond this

Where gold shimmers and silver glistens,

But it is not our world.

How wondrous it all seems

From so far away.  But

Dark all at once.

Not ours,

Never ours.

Blown glass, gently stained

With an orange hue.

Not bright orange, but

Rather like a sunset,

The kind you watch.

Your eyes reflect it,

Burning for just a moment

Before you blink.

And for that moment,

I am in love.

But this world is not ours.

We are strangers

Among mahogany chests

And candelabras.

That flicker the sunset.

The emptiness I saw inside,

I know it well.

I feel the dryness

Of the empty river.

Our hearts are bonded

By the cruel thirsty heat.

But,

For one simple moment,

You feed my soul.

The bitter sting of the orange,

But unusual wetness of your tears.

I am undone.

And you are there,

Back to your emptiness.

You left me with that one

precious taste.

And for that,

For the orange,

For the damp,

For the mahogany,

For the gold.

For the moment.

I love you.
