Chapter 1

A Chapter by K. L. Sunrise

His large hands wrapped around the shirt, she knew there was no escape. Yet she tried anyway. There was no amount of pain that she wouldn't go through just so that she could get away. If there was even a slight chance that she could get away, she would take every ounce of it.
She twisted in the man's grip not caring if the collar just ripped off, if it did happen, she would just raid the "hotspot" later.
"Nope! Nice try though!" The man hurled her  into a door. She was used to this kind of treatment, life on the streets wasn't much different. The man lifted her from the ground.
"That's your warning." He scowled at her, and lifted her from the ground. The girl, she just lied there limp to his grip. Now there was no escaping until she got to Cora's estate. She would run as fast as her legs would carry her. She had no intentions of staying at that retched place. She would never, never ever be caught in that house, ever, no matter what people did to her.

The car pulled into the entrance gate. Rows of Apple trees, and pumpkin vines blurred in the window. The girl scowled at them.
"Typical." She muttered.
"If I was you," The driver said. "I would be running for this place, not away. Then you wouldn't have to wear those rags Mar-"
"Don't say it." The girl warned. "Don't ever say that name ever again." The man shrugged.
"It's a fine name for a... well, for someone who could also be fine." She looked at her clothes. It wasn't like she wanted to wear them, but in order to blend in, she had to wear them. Although, I could renew my clothing, I'll add that to my list. She thought.
The car stopped. This was her chance. Her one and only chance.
"This is your stop." The driver leaned in close to the girl and whispered. " If I was you, I would find a different chance to run." He motioned towards the large man who had thrown her into the vehicle. "He doesn't play nice with little girls, he just does the job." The driver patted her on the back. She gave him a smile and opened the door. The large man looked at her. She just stared into the black shades that he wore. He started to reach for her.
"I can walk by myself you big pile of-"
The door to the estate squeaked open, and the girl looked away from the man.
"-fix this door by tomorrow or it comes out of your pay!" The woman lifted her gown, and gracefully descended the many white stairs leading to the mansion. When she finally reached the paved driveway, she released the dress and walked towards her daughter and the man. She stopped a few steps from the girl and looked over her.
The girl rolled her eye's. "Mother, you look very well this morning."
"And where were you Margret? You have your duties you know."
"I know mother, but if I could just-" Margret knew it was pointless to argue with Cora, so she just looked down at the ground, her mind ragging for her to start running. But she knew that she would just be brought back here, she was always returned to her mother. As if she herself was an object to be fixed.
"What am I to do mother?"
Cora finally looked at her ."Go clean up. I've had the maids pick out a dress for you- WHAT IN HEAVEN'S NAME ARE YOU WEARING CHILD?!" Cora had finally noted the brown paper boy suit that had been torn at the sleeves, knees, and a small tare at the neck.
"A school girl's dress, a sailor's shirt, and now a torn paper boy's suit!" Cora screamed. Margret winced. She hadn't ever thought about Cora's thoughts on her wear, simply because she really thought that this time she could get away, or that her mother would lose hope. Margret hated her ignorance. There was no escape.
Cora snapped, and two maids scurried out to Margret.
"Fix her." Cora demanded. This time, Cora's words hurt. Her very own mother couldn't accept Margret for who she was, an adventurer.
As the maids ushered her away, Margret looked back at her mother handing the large man a wad of cash, turning away with tears in the edges of her eyes, when her mother stroked the man's cheek approvingly. That touch was all Margret had ever wanted from her mother. The tear fell from her eyes.
