Wonderland's Reality

Wonderland's Reality

A Poem by Lisa Armstrong

Wonderland Reality

What drove the Mad Hatter mad,
In a world like Wonderland?
Where sanity is subjective --
And everyone comes from other places.

Did he perceive his liveihood
Of tea parties was in vain?
An un-celebration of inconsequential days
That demand efforts even he finds inane?

Perhaps he fails too many times,
To meet someone else's demands --
With outfits for the upper class,
While he struggles with fashion trends?

He keeps company with the Cheshire Cat,
who's smile is faintly oblique.
They waste time, with food and wine,
At elaborate functions in celebration of the elite.

The door mice respectfully move aside,
To allow him access to immortalized halls.
They show him passages through locked doors,
Forbidden to Alice -- and so many more.

The Queen of Hearts demands admission,
And condemns his associates.
She requires him to live a precarious life,
Which revolves around enigmatic laws.

But the cards all know his source of pain,
Which they discuss as the executions proceed,
It's his reflection in "The Looking Glass,"
Of what he chose to be.

I like it, but then...I'm pretty partial to anything AIW.
