The Beginning

The Beginning

A Poem by Kaela Craven

Can you see the red sunset?

Well, the sun is red, but actually

I don't think it's really setting.

Maybe it's the dawn

Or maybe it's a setting that never completes.

It's exactly the kind of picture that would stay just like that forever

With the glowing on the green hills

And a tiny white horse in the distance.

Can you see that little horse?

I think someone is on his back.

I think they are looking at the sun

Half-way high

And feeling that rise in their belly

That you get at the beginning.

The beginning.

But for us - or me at least -

It's just a painting.

It's still and stuck

Just like that forever.

My world used to look just like that.

It was a constant red sun.

The days melted together and the nights were only illusion.

I wish I didn't feel that I have to cling to the sun as it sinks out of reach.

But you see this picture?

At night this is what I cling to.

They seem awfully long now, the nights.

Thank goodness

For the paintings.
