Dirty Tears

What is friendship, really?

When you cry in someone’s chest your tears do more than what you think. They also drench the other’s heart. That was what happens to me every time I held my friend’s crying body in my arms. My chest tightens and I could feel water build up in my eyes. Her sorrow was also my sorrow. It hurts me so much to see tears run down her face. 

So as I prepare the snacks for the DVDs we were going to watch my friend, Lily, cried her eyes out. Her eyes were sore and red. She was hugging her legs to her chest as she sat on my big pink couch. She was shivering. She was choking in her words as I sat next to her and rubbed her back with my right hand. I tried easing her pain but it didn’t work. She kept on talking and talking but I barely listened. I don’t want to hear how badly she has been treated or how badly it affected her. If I really listened then I might not control my anger. 

“Gosh Mary if you only knew how stressful a love life is,” How would I know? I don’t have one. 

“If only…” I replied as I played the DVD. 

Silence engulfed us. Lily was concentrated on the comedy I rented and I was concentrated on her. Seeing if she would smile and she did. Her smile was wide and ear to ear. It was so wide that it temporarily covered all the sadness she and I felt. Her reddish baby face was beaming with happiness. Strands of her hair fell down her face that perfected the picture. 

It was true that a tear could stain your heart but that's why smiles were invented. It was the perfect bleach against tear stains.
