New Shoes

New Shoes

A Story by Jeremy

My new wife walks to the bridge with pain in her eyes. She's wearing a dark blue dress that makes her mother frown - not that it's revealing; it's just not white. Her feet trip in new shoes bought just for today, made to make me smile. She'd found someone online that takes high-heeled shoes and decoupages clippings of comics on them. They're hilarious and beautiful, just like her.

She grips the railing of the bridge, her jaw clenched, eyes about to burst in tears. Panic sets in like a cold knife. Will this be the shortest marriage ever? Expecting the worst, I ask, "Is everything okay babe?"

She looks at my face and laughs. "Yeah." she says. "Except these shoes are freakin' killing me!"
