lighthouse

lighthouse

A Poem by john alan willox

i walked to

where the lighthouse stood

against a cold november sky,

grey water

currents pulling thoughts to sea…

i remembered making love

beneath the evening trees across the bay upon the hill,

where we drank wine

and ignored noticed strangers passing, assured of our companionship…

i took the gold from my wrist

and studied its message, anonymous lighthouse message,

standard against the fog of hazard;

golden treasure

            false pleasure

                        love’s measure…

a dream of something everlasting

never lasting, save the echo

of shattered wishes, dashed against november swells, waves

of cold silence…

i threw the gift

as far as hope could travel, there was no splash

only a flash as it disappeared,

as all hope disappeared

near a lighthouse that remained silent in its warning…

we can be fooled by love, but do we care? we still feel something...this poem reminds me of throwing a penny in a wishing well...no splash, it just sinks...with all of our dreams.
