Irony, Karma, and Fate Walk into a Bar

October 27, 2011

A trio comes in, every night therein, they settle themselves at the bar

They each get a drink, and to each do they think, that themselves to be ruler of all

They take a sip in, they drown in chagrin, while they take note on those passing by

And curiously take, while those still awake, like spiders they wait to derive…

Curiously taken, the man-he was shaken, transfixed ‘pon the beauty that wait him

There up at the bar, lined up as the stars, of Orion’s belt he want to unfasten

The peach pie blonde, whose heart does abscond, with thistles and thorns ensnare

Piqued her quaint interest, alluring this artist, to toy with this folly affair.

“Behold my dear sisters,” she strategically whispered, “Look whose eye we’ve caught this fine night,

To be as so bold, this game does never grow old, no need for us players yield nor respite.”

They nodded their heads, and pulled at the thread, drawing him ever so near

With the batting of eyes, and the crossing of thighs, the letch too foolish to fear

“Hello, my dear ladies, though it may seem like I’m baiting, thy eyes glitter like dewdrops in morning

Whatever I shall do, I do all for you, I relinquish my heart- ever adoring.”

The letch do dispose, of gallantry imposed, scoffs confer upon chastity’s waiting

Though she need not appear, and of whispering near, his swoon soft words feign placating.

“Oh my dear troubadour, as I’ve seen once before-a recent past lover takes note over there

Has bitten her lip, and soon she shall quit, and is now with a scowl and a glare.”

Irony cleverly smiled, letch believed himself beguiled, and continued on with his blatant tirade

A short while later, this duplicitous satyr, still determined, transfixed on an upgrade

But who does shout out, of sisterly clout, who happens upon by them by chance?

That lover’s account, will soon be sought out, by letch’s unwanted advance.

She stands at the ready, her voice firm and steady, tears spilling like diamonds from eyes

She does not shout out, but does turnabout, and left letch with want from his lies.

Though the three they not fear, nor do they cheer, though chemistry boiling within

They each exchange glances, with each different stances, holding one to account therein

For a smack on the face, the hand does not waste, a letch’s intentions do take

That the truth setting far, amongst now even the stars, and slithers with intent of a snake.

So without further ado, he did further pursue, the lady with bright crimson flair

Who sat beside waiting, as he came forth for the taking, emotions unbeknownst and threadbare.

“Aye, for fools does he make us, trying to break us, with charm that will fall with disguise

For, we’re privy to all,” Karma said, her voice small, “he has mistaken us for common barflies.”

In nodded agreement, he really should have seen it, that look that was beheld in red light

For as he professed his love, feigning the wings of a dove, that once again was shot down in mid-flight.

See he yet had another, that soon he would discover, had arisen above this fine day

And to each bore their own, and for him had she shown, her own ideas of wanting and play.

“Dear sir, do you see, over there-isn’t she, the one that had promised the world?

For what do you know, she has fled and she’s grown, apart from you- proved love unfurled?”

Letch followed Karma’s finger, and then his gaze lingered, upon the beauty that sat beside

A man whose estate, of three times letch could make, his beauteous lover shanghaied.

A woman, a lover, perhaps one day the mother, of his children that he once had foreseen

He gave all his heart, promised they would never part, since he was a man of nineteen.

She was bored as she waited, got frustrated, and lacked guilt from the curse of her lies

For she blatantly wore him, disposed letch on a whim, and ferried off with not even a goodbye.

Karma smiled slightly, and gestured politely, to the three women who remained at the bar.

For letch knew what he was, but continued because, he yearned for evening’s flesh pourboire.

He went to the last, with no thought of his past, he followed the weight of her stare

For Fate always knows, the ending of throes, always starts and ends with a pair.

“So is this the he, that is want of a she, to bed with him so he may feel

A bit of a quickening, though isn’t it sickening, that not a bit of your reality is real?”

He didn’t take this to heart, and he could not outsmart, the one with tresses of nightshade

And though the words did appeal, without chastity’s zeal, without care that his hormones will fade.

For she soon made her leave, poor letch so naïve, he followed her after she left

And unbeknownst to him, as a result of his sin, will be held accountable for all of his deft

In the playing of games, the truth in love defamed, with many hearts broken to pieces

He brushed them all off, heartlessly had scoffed, crumbs fell lost within the deep creases.

Fate reached the curb, and quickly she turned, and met his eye as he stood at the door

He then walked ever nearer, his bold intentions clearer, from lying lips more promises to pour

He not want of the heart, letch’s own would not start, pumping common sense to his head

For all that he thought, and all he had besought, was a warm body to lie in his bed.

It didn’t matter who, of this lady Fate knew, and turned to start walking the street

With a roll of the thunder, surrounding souls set asunder, nevermore shall he ever mistreat

A woman of virtue, true love never bid adieu, instead shattered upon this cool night

And if only he knew, this treacherous fool, he’d act differently within hindsight

So lesson be learned, to those who’ve been burned, by letches who live to abuse

Such wonderful gifts, so easily dismissed, shall reap what they sow with a noose

Bobbing headlights appeared, eyes glistening without fear, with attention diverted in haste

A screech of the brake, though it was much too late, as was the choice to remain ever chaste.

Those driving behind, this wheel of time, realize our phase in this life is restricted

by years that will show, just how much we have grown, and just how we will be depicted

in the lives that remain, will they hold great disdain?  Or will they remember with pride

and hold ever so close, those images through windows, of the mind where they will always reside.

If letch would’ve understood, the repercussions of falsehood, would come back to haunt him in the end

Perhaps he would change, instead of estrange, perhaps he’d take the time to amend.

Irony, Karma, and Fate, those three do not date, nor do they give their lessons in strife

For those three appear, when those insincere, need a reminder of what is important in this life.

I had a lot of fun with this one! Inspired by my luck with relationships, my vile hatred for that evil pig of a woman Irony, and a discussion with a fellow WC member. Thanks for being an inspiration you!

What an epic of a poem and surely, what work went into it.. or maybe your thoughts just took off on their own and you merely (merely!) reined them into a little order. The wording is very cleverly done, you've turned logic into myth and vice versa, that i so admire; and, I don't doubt that you know that you've pointed the way, taught or maybe, more appropriately. whispered what is so often forgotten.

Highly imaginative stuff. It had an 18c feel to it and that language and rhythm was maintained throughout. Difficult to do.
The Themes are laid out in a serious and sometimes amusing way that held this reader right to the end.
A real work of poetic imagination with 'work' being the operative work
Super.

Wow, this was amazing. Loved the word choice, the pattern, everything. From start to finish... this was quite captivating! Great job, I'll be sharing this one.

The ending here wrapped up unbelievably well, making a superb example of what an ending should be. Congrats on another amazing write.

Wow! Great limericky style, loved all the pictures and sayings. Wise profound lines. History repeating itself. Opportunities missed. They say promiscuity is covert depression. This was really good. Thankyou.
