The Ocean

The Ocean

A Poem by J.V. Stanley

The Ocean

Candlelight opera,

A synagogue of sorrow;

Mourning, a breeze

Flows upon a broken leaf,

Swimming upon the turbulent surface of serenity.

A tranquil depression, foot holes in the water,

Sandy impressions of understanding mold

Into the taffy sand.

What lies beyond this pewter ocean,

Besides the storm dangling overhead

With lightening fingers

Tearing at the seams of the firmament?

Ligaments distorted, refracted,

Pulled by the intense undertow

As they reach for the elusive shallow waters.

Swarthy faces of urgency, envious of the

Lascivious plovers flirting on the shores

Rise from the surf, the whitecaps grappling for air.

Their lungs swallow the ocean in its entirety,

Capturing the jewels that plunder within

The soft pillow-like surface.
