The Fighting Tide

The Fighting Tide

A Poem by Falling Stars

The sea boils and seethes, mercilessly pounding shore
White foam astride the crests of waves upon the cliffs at sea
And howl and rage and spit its spray like bitter words of betrayal
As it doth hammer at the cliff because it dared to be

For the sea is not restrained by any man or any will
It roars and crashes, frenzied by the miles it has come
For flows and rivers, salty tears, do pile into its bounds
Embittered by emotions and the water's never ending thrum

And tossed about like leaves on wind pile bodies in the fray
So helpless against the anger that has never known its bounds
The icy cold of loneliness and piercing daggers of despair
Enough to breed insanity upon its towering grounds

A hysterical cry among the darkness and the stillness
The calm and the sincerity of green pastures and hills
For rage would rip the grass up from the stalks that bravely grow
For anger at its purest never calms and never stills

The rocks beneath the water jut out into the howling mass
Where darkness and chaos reign below the fighting tide
Yet none stand high enough to challenge the unbound wrath
For only time can wear away the courage to have pride
'
Insanity breeds sanity, some may say otherwise
But if we see the fighting tide of nature's unchained fury
The power and the strength that pounds away with no reason
Inspires the kind of power that fights in clarity
The peace we must sustain above the raging of the sea

To let war ravage the lands we hold in the name of sanity
Would be to let the fighting tide wash us with hate and sorrow
To preserve all love and peace in the name of humanity
Is the only sanity that we will ever know

I found this a very thought-provoking read, the use of a metaphor to express a philosophy. I am a pacifist myself, and I agree. To let war ravage our world is to invite the chaos we try to separate ourselves from. Very eloquent, and a great poem.
