A Poem From My Younger Self

A Poem From My Younger Self

A Poem by 🍂Ellie🍂
"

How I've drifted from writing, and how I am learning to love it once more.

"
There was a little girl,
who dreamt of fairy tales.
She read storybooks of
great adventures,
and powerful characters.

There was a little girl,
who wrote tall tales,
her notebooks filled
with pencil markings,
and her stories jumped
from the pages;
magic in each
story she spun.

There was a little girl,
who wished to
see her stories
on shelves in bookstores,
touching the hearts
of her readers.

There was a woman,
who abandoned her pen
and notebook,
unable to tell
the vibrant stories
the little girl once
dreamt of.

There was a woman,
who left her books
on shelves, untouched,
leaving them to
collect dust.

The little girl asked,
"Why are your notebooks
empty and your shelves
dusty?"

The woman said,
"The words no
longer flow like
they once have,
and the spines
of the books
have become too
heavy for my hands."

The little girl said,
"But we've stayed up
countless nights
with our nose in
a book,
and have filled
notebook after notebook
with many worlds."

The woman sighed,
"To tell stories,
it was meant to
be a dream,
and a dream alone."

The woman continued,
"They say such
a job is foolish."

The little girl said,
"But the ones who
say such things
are the fools."

"They have never
dreamed a dream
so beautiful,
for they do not
wish to see with
eyes like yours,
or feel with a heart
as tender as yours,
nor do they write
with hands like yours."

"And to not dream
is to live a life of
someone else,
if it is living, at all."

The woman thought,
and she thought some
more, letting the little
girl's words unfold
like the pages of
a novel.

With a smile,
the woman said,
"You speak words
of a poet."

And the little girl
giggled,
"For it was
always in
you."

Interestingly, this not only reads as if it's taking place; in someone's imagination or dream. It seems to portray a more mature woman, talking down to her younger naive self; reflecting back thoughts upon her own writing. Indeed, children sometimes imagine the most unlikely or bizarre career or work choices; for the future. And, the naive girl in this poem, thinks that wishing for a dream-like aspiration; is a guarantee that it's going to happen. After all, so many adult writers don't make it into a main career. Even so, this thoughtful poem ends on a cheery note; "for it was always in you".

Am I understanding this to be a conversation between a young girl and hee adult self?

I love that idea. Wow. Very ambitious too.

But mostly, very skillfully penned.

Thank you! And yes, I wrote it as if my younger self is speaking to me, now as an adult. :)
