The Young Surgeons

The Young Surgeons

A Chapter by Junnifer Ngo

A nineteen year old woman walked through the bustling street. Her brown curled waist length hair flowed behind her as she strode elegant steady steps. She moved her choppy straight bangs out of her chocolate brown eyes as she walked. Many people gave her surprised glances, marveling at her beauty. A small smirk came to her porcelain face. How she missed the town she had grown up in. She quickened her pace and walked into her former school. There, the teachers smiled at her with respect and the students gaped at her. Her smirk grew wider as she watched the reactions everyone gave her. She soon stopped at a certain classroom. The classroom where her old classmates now came to study every morning. She opened the door, making everyone turn towards her. Many of the students looked at her with a confused shocked faces, others gave her a horrified face and the rest gave her a delighted face.

"Hello everyone. Did you miss me?" the young woman teased. A woman with red, wavy, shoulder length hair ran up to the brown haired woman and hugged her. The brown haired woman laughed and hugged back. "Hello, Rosy. I'm glad you missed me," the brown haired woman chuckled.

Another woman who had black, braided, chest length hair ran up to the two women. She hugged two women and happily cried, "Vivian! You're back! We missed you so much!"

Vivian chuckled again before saying, "Yes, Arabella, I can tell. I won't be coming to school though."

"What? Why not?" Rosy asked with sadness in her soft brown eyes.

"I finished school. I'm a surgeon now. Heck, I own my own hospital," Vivian answered truthfully.

"What? There's no way! You're only nineteen! You're younger them all of us!" Arabella complained, disappointment and disbelief in her black eyes. Vivian only shrugged.

"Only by one year and the only reason why I came here during school hours is because the teachers wanted me to give a lecture about being a surgeon. I won't be doing it alone though. I have a rival who also owns his own hospital. We're going to be giving the lecture together," Vivian explained.

"Wait, where did you go for four freaking years?" asked a female student.

"Maryland. I went to Johns Hopkins University there and got to where I am now. Anyway, I gotta go get my coffee. I'll explain everything else during the lecture," Vivian replied. She turned to leave, but when she opened the door, a man who looked no older than twenty stood in the door frame. He ran a hand through his messy dirty blonde hair. His brown eyes gleamed with amusement. Vivian sighed and tried to step over the man's long legs, but he grabbed onto her waist, making sure she couldn’t run away.

"Ms.Vivian, it's not nice to ignore someone," the man playfully scolded. Vivian stuck her tongue out childishly and squirmed in his firm hold.

"Mr.Lawrence, it's not nice to block someone's path," Vivian answered in a sickly sweet tone. Lawrence just chuckled before ruffling her hair.

"You know that I don't like to be ignored and if you didn't ignore me, I wouldn't have blocked your path in the first place."

"Meany," Vivian pouted. Lawrence chuckled again before freeing her waist.

"Is that you boyfriend?" Arabella asked with a suggestive tone.

"Nope, this is the rival I was talking about. He's one year older than me, so I feel accomplished," Vivian replied proudly.

"Only because you have a late birthday," Lawrence defended.

"That doesn't change the fact that I'm younger," Vivian argued back. Before Lawrence could say anything back, the teacher entered the room.

"Hello you two. You seem to be getting along fine," the teacher commented. Vivian gave her a mature and warm, but fake giggle while Lawrence gave her a kind smile. The teacher explained to the students their new schedule of the day. Vivian held back numerous yawns as the teacher spoke. She soon left and the two surgeons who were eying each other.

"Okay, I'm Dr.Lawrence and this is Dr.Vivian. We're both surgeons and not only own a hospital, but are the head surgeons there," Lawrence started.

"I specialize in pediatric surgery, which is surgery involving small children and babies. Dr.Lawrence is a specialist in transplantation surgery, which is where he basically replace an organ with a new one," Vivian continued.

"As a surgeon, we perform surgery. It may look gross when you see us pulling out organs, cutting people open and use tools inside people, but if we don't that person is going to have a miserable life or die," Lawrence explained bluntly.

"Also, if you aim to be a surgeon, you're going to have to be able to handle pulling another person's gut. It can get stressful, but if you have a good surgeon to dump most of the work on, you'll be fine. So, any questions?" Vivian added.

"How did you two become surgeons at such young ages?" asked Arabella.

"Well, we were sought out by the director of Johns Hopkins University. There, we went through the medical courses for four years and we ended up where we are now," Lawrence answered.

"We were his favorite students, so he offered to help us start our own hospital. Of course we both agreed and now we're competing," clarified Vivian.

The two surgeons answered a few more questions before the bell rung. They allowed the class to go off to break, feeling mildly hungry themselves. Vivian walked out of the loud classroom and walked to her car. She was tired of answering questions about her life and wanted nothing more, but a cup of coffee. As she strode to her car, she saw her two friends walk up to her, excitement in their eyes.

"Vivian! Are you going to Starbucks?" asked Arabella. Vivian gave her a curt nod before making an attempt to get into her car, not wanting to buy her friends coffee with the little money she had brought.

"I'll buy you some, if you answer a question for us," Rosy bargained.

"Depends on the question," answered a curious Vivian.

"Are you and Dr.Lawrence dating?" Arabella squealed.

"Hell no. We use to study together, but that's it," Vivian answered with a disgusted tone. Her pride couldn't take her friends asking her if she was dating her rival. "Now, let's go. I want coffee badly now and we don't have that much time," she happily said before ducking into her car. Her two friends followed her, unsatisfied with her answer.

When they entered the small coffee shop, many people gazed at the young surgeon. Many stared in awe and envy, but others stared at her with pure terror. Instead of flipping them off like she would usually have, she gave them a warm smile and bought herself a white mocha frappuccino and warm butter croissant. After reviving her food, she quickly drove her friends and herself back to the school where she had more lectures to teach. Many people envied her for her coffee, but said nothing to her. Vivian tried to contain a smirk, but failed when she saw Lawrence frown at her coffee cup.

"All that coffee you drink is going to stunt your growth," he stated as they walked to the class together.

"Shut up," Vivian pouted. Lawrence just chuckled as he opened the classroom door for her. The students looked at her with fear and shock as she walked into the room. Vivian readied herself for a long boring day.

Your writing flows nicely, and kept me reading. You put good detail in your descriptions, such as "She moved her choppy straight bangs out of her chocolate brown eyes as she walked". I like what you've done here, however the main character is hard to like. I don't know what you were shooting for, but she's just... uppity? It's not necessarily bad, and in this case it's very understandable if someone of such a young age was able to own a hospital. Overall she is hard to relate to. This is just my personal opinion. I wanted to give you an honest opinion because I see potential, I in no way meant to be harsh. Keep writing, I'll stay tuned.
