                        &

                                           the 7 Wayward Wards

The days were long and dreary as the 7 traveled back and forth to the coal caves. They all worked hard for the infamous evil self-made Queen, that they never saw yet knew quite well as Snow Black!

She had hired these seven individuals because they were known as hard workers. Also since they got along, being brothers who lacked in nothing. Seems they inherited an unusual amount of money from their parents, due in part to a botched medical testing that the preceding government had done. Of course, they were never informed of any of this.

The seven brothers never knew their real mother either. She was told the experiment had failed, and her baby had died. She never knew that her child, along with 6 others survived. When they were old enough, they were given a small house to live in until they each subsequently died!

The oldest was Frank, and he was always in a frazzled state. He wore all black, his hair was wild which furthered his look of being frazzled. And despite what the other brothers said, he continued his love for Gothic music. Almost obsessing about death, dismembering someone or other such disturbing ways.

Then Griffen was born, and he had a gloomy outlook all the time. I might mention that he was the only one born with a pair of wings- except one side was smaller that the other. Which was one reason for his gloomy behavior. I suppose anyone would be gloomy when you had useless wings attached to your body. Griffen would walk around, and reply loudly ''Why be born with a set of wings, if I can't even fly?''

The seventh brother Newton logically retorted back ''better not complain to much or one night Gus might chop them off!''

If you hadn't guessed by now, Newton was the brains of the family. His head was over-sized due to the incomprehensible size of his brain. Even at his birth, he could speak forming perfect sentences. At a week old the scientist remarked his IQ was off the charts!

The the 3rd brother was Don, and he seemed to walk around with a permanent sad look. Even though he was happy inside, he looked so downtrodden. He avoided looking into any mirrors, as it made him feel more downtrodden than he was.

Earnest was the fourth brother, and he could never stand still. He moved with more energy than all of them combined. There were times when one of the others tried to grab him, but he moved so quickly none could catch up. He would laugh and laugh, it was like a game to him.

Which leads me to the 5th brother- Gus. Whom I mentioned earlier when speaking concerning gloomy Griffen, the poor winged brother. While Frank enjoyed Gothic music; Gus was obsessed in reading about gruesome deaths. In his mind, that's what he wished he could do. Maybe one day he would get his wish, but for now he just read about killing someone.

Now I've mentioned Frank, Griffen, Don, Earnest, Gus and Newton. I must now mention the youngest of the seven brothers. His name was Samuel at his birth, but he shortened it to Sam. Being frail and sickly all the time, he felt powerful with a shorter name. Besides being frail, he emitted a strange sickly sweet odor..... almost like a walking almond tree. Like he was given a large dose of poison, that didn't quite kill him.

So that is the names, along with the description of the seven brothers who worked for the Evil Snow Black. Just who is this Queen of Darkness you might ask? And how did she become so evil?

Well this same group of scientist was given a grant from a secret government agency. They were allowed to do genetic testing on certain people. Which some experiments worked, and others didn't.

The had successfully manipulated the genes of one woman who produced a child so perfect in every way. Thus thinking if they could do it once, they were sure to have success again. They felt like they were God's for the scientific field!

Yet each experiment they tried ended in failer after failer. Some died before birth, or had to be put to death because of such severe deformaties. One scientist decided it was time to go back to the beginning. He alone remained optimistic in his attempt to reproduce their first successful products. So the others decided to allow him to try once more. They had a new test subject, who was willing to get pregnant for them. She was inseminated with a few fertile eggs, then allowed to keep the child that lived!

Mrs. Black soon delivered a baby girl. After the scientists examined the child, she was allowed to take the little baby home. Before she left, they asked '' What will you call the child, so we can document her name for our files?''

As Mrs. Black looked down at the young baby, and saw her skin was pure white. She glanced up, and while smiling she replied '' Just like the white blanket that covers the ground during winter, her name will be Snow- yes Snow Black is perfect!''

The scientists looked at one another in horror. But soon composed themselves, and bid Mrs. Black goodbye and good luck. She never knew about the past experiments, nor that it was a success for Mrs. White. Or that she too had a baby girl, in which she called Snow!

One scientist quietly remarked '' It's the yin/yang thing.''

Dr. M.N. Gel'e abruptly asked '' In heavens name what ever do you mean- a yin/yang thing?''

Dr. Travers replied '' Snow White/Snow Black! While our first test subject bore a child that was good, and still is a sweet person.''

Dr. M.N. Gel'e turned to watch Mrs. Black walking down the street, he replied grimly ''This one will surely be evil!''

Another scientist cautiously retorted '' I sure hope not. Let's go in and start the next testing, before our grants revoked!''

They all headed back into the building, that looked more like a coffee shop than a laboratory. Dr. Travers took charge of the next test subject. Instead of putting her real name down, he assigned just a number to her. Writing down the #666, he chuckled thinking 'how ironic it is, that this should be her number.'

He told Dr. M.N. Gel'e what he did; so as not to get too personally involved. Just in case something should go wrong. The test subject was told this was to protect her identity. (of course the scientists were covering their asses.) In case they had another botched experiment on there hands.

As the months progressed, the test subject only known as #666, proceeded in a timely manner. Of the fourteen eggs she had been impregnated with, only 7 completely formed into babies. At least that's what the initial examinations showed.

Test subject #666, had been told to resume her regular activities. Also to take her pre-natal vitamins, and drink plenty of milk. Then come back for a routine check-up, just to make sure the babies were developing properly. During the 2nd trimester, test subject #666, was given an ultrasound. This is when they noticed some of the unusual differences in each baby.

Yet they never told the pregnant mother, each doctor felt the undue stress would only worsen a few of the babies. So she was told everything was going as planned. She has no idea about the genetic manipulation that had been done to her future children either.

Soon it was time for test subject #666 to deliver her babies. She was prepped by a male nurse, then given a sedative to put her out. It was necessary to perform a Caesarean section because of the multiple births. And also as a precaution to the shape and sizes of each baby. They all had some kind of anomaly to them.

Never once did they call attention to the fact the babies being removed were abnormal. Although some had no outside evidence that somehow they were different than any other baby ever born. But a few, like Newton who had an unusually large head, or Sam who was very tiny. In fact Sam only weighed 3 lbs., yet seemed to be fully formed.

A few of the others had minor defects, nothing majorly obvious. Yet Dr. M. N. Gel'e could tell as each baby was brought out the defect they were given. While the other Doctors never noticed, a big evil grin came over his face.

Each baby was taken away and put in a special nursery. When the last baby had been delivered, test subject #666 was stitched up and wheeled to a recovery room that was secluded from her babies. Upon waking up she was told they had all died. Which she was informed might happen if they couldn't cope outside the womb. They felt it was better for her to never know she delivered seven creatures, not quite human.

Test subject #666 was given a few days to recuperate at the facility. Then when she was strong enough she was driven to her home. After she was let out they never bothered to check on her again. She was just one of the many test subjects for genetic manipulation.

The seven babies were well taken care of, that is until they were old enough to leave. Soon the funding for the special facility ran out, and each doctor went on to something else. Only Dr. M.N. Gel'e remained in the genetic manipulation field. Like his older brother he moved to South America where he could do testing on anything or anyone. He found an ally within the current government, and they wanted to create a race of men with super strength.

One of the doctor's stayed behind to make sure the seven wayward wards had food, clothing and whatever they asked for.

You can't imagine some of the odd things they would request. The only rational one was Newton, all he wanted was books. The more he read, the smarter he got. That's when he found out they had been a creation by Dr. M.N. Gel'e. He was the brother to one mad scientist during the days of Hitler's reign of terror.

Newton surmised that if he were to reverse what had been done, they could live a normal life. But they needed money, lots of money. And to get this, they all would need a job. Where could these 7 misfits of society get work? Newton scoured the newspapers, magazines, and the internet for something.

Finally, he saw something that looked promising. It was extracting coal out of holes in the ground. It was for someone who took over the coal industry. It was a name Newton had never heard of before. This he would research, first through the internet, then old magazines or newspapers.

Soon he found that prior to the births of him and his seven brothers, she had been a test subject's baby. At her birth, she had no anomalies. The test subject, one Mrs. Black was allowed to take one- Snow Black home! She was raised like any normal child, and grew to be a healthy woman. With aspirations of being a wealthy woman, she was no different than anyone else. Snow Black was never told about the genetic testing that her mother went through. When Snow turned 25, her mother died- causes unknown the coroners report said....

Newton requested to see Ms. Snow Black, mainly to inquire about the coal mining job. They soon became friends and when he gained enough of her trust, he revealed what this rogue doctor had done. Also that him and his brothers had been the last test subjects. They lacked in nothing, but for him to reverse some of the problems his brothers had, he would need money.

When Snow Black heard about how she was brought into the world, it triggered something inside her brain. An evilness like no other surfaced. She was willing to help Newton, but only if they worked in the coal mines gathering all they could. At once he could tell what anomaly she was given. This once demure, shy woman turned into an evil dominate creature. He inquired as to whether she would like him to fix her, but she firmly replied '' No!''

'' I will go home, and explain to my brothers we now have jobs. No more will we be cramped in our house, but will be diggers retrieving this black rocks called coal for you!'' Newton replied, then bid the Queen goodbye.

For months the seven worked long and hard for Snow Black. While Snow's company grew larger, Newton had accumulated enough money for his research. He first took blood from each of his brothers, and tried to locate the defect in each DNA sequence. To see if he could manipulate genes, he took some of Earnest's and put it in Sam.

Never did he expect the results to show up so fast. Although Earnest showed no signs of slowing down; Sam increased in his energy output. Then Newton wanted to remove the gene responsible for Sam's unusual smell- the sickly sweet smell of almonds. He indeed found it, and removed it slowly. The others never noticed anything different between the two. They had become used to his unusual smell, but the more they worked in the coal mines thats all they could smell now.

Once Newton asked Snow Black what she was doing with all this coal. She told him it was none of his concern, that he along with his brothers were paid quite well for their services. So he never asked again, and spent most of his evenings perfecting his gene reversal therapy.

He soon wondered about Don, and his genetic defect. It wasn't really a defect, but a missing gene causing him to look sad all of the time. So he ordered all kinds of books on plastic surgery. Since he figured out if he could rearrange some of his facial features it would help him. He soon had enough knowledge accumulated that he felt quite confident in doing the surgery.

He took Don to a corner of the coal cave, and asked

'' Don, do you like your looks? I mean looking like you're sad even when you aren't?''

Don replied '' No I don't Newton. But what am I to do, this is how I was born.''

He began to walk off, when Newton grabbed his arm saying ''wait.''

Don quieried '' Why, you got some way of fixing me? Whats cooking inside that big head of yours?''

''Yes and no, yes I have a way of changing your facial features. But only slightly- I don't want to raise any of your hopes up. And I don't want to make any drastic changes, just in case that nosy Doctor comes back around'' Newton remarked in a most logical manner.

''Hot diggity dog, this is great Newton. Now when do you want to start? Even a slight change in my looks will be better than this ridiculous permanent frown I have now!'' Don replied joyfully, although his sad look still showed. You could tell by his eyes for the first time he was truly happy.

Newton suggested that if could be done this coming weekend when they didn't have to work. He could pretend to be sick, and be kept away from the others. This way he could heal in peace!

So when the weekend came, Newton took Don to his lab. At first, Don was amazed by how it was set up. But they soon got down to business of the minor surgery. Newton had thought of everything to keep Don happy. Which impressed Don, but he couldn't wait to see the results.

Newton told the others that Don caught a bad cold. He wanted him segregated to keep it from spreading to the others. And to make sure it didn't develop into anything worse. They bought the story, and went about their usual chores or whatever they wanted.

By Monday, Don was better, and his surgery being a minor one showed they had an incredible healing ability. If Don could heal within two days, he wondered if he could help Griffen? Maybe he could figure out why one didn't grow properly, and how he could fix it. Then he could try flying. Like Griffen kept repeating to the others '' what good is having a pair of wings, if you can't fly!'' Newton handed a small round mirror to Don, and said look. Don was given a slight grin, which he wanted to proudly show off. He ran off before Newton could stop him.

As he got upstairs he yelled ''Ta-da..... the new me!''

Gus looked up from his current horror novel and replied '' same ole Don, as far as I'm concerned.''

Then went back to reading how this person killed or maimed another. You could hear a sadistic cackle coming from Gus.

As long as he never actually hurt someone, Newton say no reason to work on him. Nor as wild and frazzled Frank seemed, he was pretty normal too. It was only Griffen he worried about, and how to fix his wings. Then to find the good Doctor who did all this awful testing. He wondered how many others were test subjects?

This he would think long and hard over, and maybe with the help of Snow Black they both could find the evil Doctor.

WOW what an imagination... such a creative twist to the old story... and yet also it has quite some statements toward the state of our world today, especially the dangers involved in science trying to mess with the human condition.
