A FORGOTTEN TIME
So long ago, at least that is what it seems like to me. A time when a child could roam free, from sunup to sundown. Only coming in for a drink, or to let your parents know you're alright. Then go back out to play, finish chores or go catch tadpoles down the way We would put the tadpoles into a jar. That was in hopes of seeing them change into becoming frogs.
Such simple times they were too! Playing hopscotch on the front walkway, or running through the sprinklers to get cooled off during the summers heat. I remember one time my dad came home with a rolled up length of plastic. At first we kids, all seven were befuddled about what this could be for. Us kids would soon find out, shortly after dad had it rolled out, then sprayed down with water. Then to keep it wet with water, he attached the water hose where the directions showed.
All the others, my brothers and sisters were soon sliding over the plastic. The all had fun or so it seemed. I, of course being frail was to scared to try it out. My brothers and sisters that were older always teased me, but I didn't care. Dad always told them to leave me alone, that if I didn't want to slide then I didn't have to. I could just stand there in my purple bathing suit " so that's what I did. Stood there and smiled as I watched them have fun. It wasn't until after mom called them in that dad told me to try just once to see how fun it was. But just as I got to the end of the plastic, there was a rock and my knee hit it, right smack in the middle cutting it.
I cried, and my dad came over to pick me up then hugged me. That was the last time I tried sliding down the slip-n-slide. And I sat watching the others, or sat drawing in a tablet that my dad bought for me. Which I enjoyed much better than any ole slip-n-slide! I had forgotten how much fun being a kid could be too. © 2010 Ice QueenJen |
