Unlikely Friends-chapter 5- The Demise of Sammy Slug

The five insects do what they think will save their home from destruction.

 

 

       The Demise of Sammy the Slug

 

While they all stood hiding behind a row of cabbages, Suzee came flying up. Sherman was to nervous to even eat, though these were his favorite meal. They looked up as she let out a sweet buzz, then said “ He's coming, the slimy slug is coming.

 

Herman popped his head up, looking out of the hole he just dug. K.C. started doing flips and Katy sat preening her wings. Nothing seemed to bother her or Nikki, they both were content just laying around.

 

Sherman slid up and retorted angrily, “ This is serious, he will ruin our home if he isn't stopped!”

 

Katy stood up, walked over to Sherman. She put her hand on his shell, then said “ Don't worry Shermie, it will work. Your cousin is stupid enough to go right into the salt or whatever that stuff is. I also put some bait of my own in the middle!”

 

Herman looked at Katy, and began wondering what it was she put inside.

 

He asked her “What did you put in there Katy?”

 

“ Oh, just something I have seen work on slugs before” Katy replied.

 

K.C. squinted his eyes while he gazed at Katy.

 

Sherman looked at Katy, smiled and was happy she was here. Suzee stopped flying around and lit on a plant, then said “ Oh this waiting is tedious, I'm going to tend to some tomato plants I saw earlier. I'll be back when I am done!”

 

As she flew off, Katy went to find a cool spot to rest in. Every once in a while Herman would go and check if Sammy was near the trap yet. When he came back he just shook his head no. K.C. walked up to Sherman and whispered “ What will happen it Sammy when he does take the bait? Will we have to do any clean-up Sherman?”

 

Sherman slowly answered “ K.C. it's not going to be a pretty site. But if there is anything left of his body, I'm sure Farmer Johnson will take care of it. So we won't have to do anything, and best of all our home will be safe.”

 

“ Oh good, I just don't want the girls to witness any gruesome mess. Do you think Farmer Johnson will wonder how the box got knocked down? I mean it is a tall box, so she would think some animals could have done it. Not bugs like us, I bet she would never imagine that four different bugs could work together to keep her garden safe” K.C. muttered in a rambling way.

 

Sherman wasn't really paying attention to K.C. until he mentioned the four of them being different. That's when he thought how they were “unlikely friends.”

 

He looked at K.C., and calmly stated “ We are the most unlikely friends, thats for sure!”

 

 

Katy came back from checking on Nikki, he decided to quietly nap since there wasn't much a caterpillar could do. Katy walked up behind K.C. and asked “Anything yet boys?”

 

K.C. jumped forward and landed on his butt, which made Katy giggle. Sherman looked at K.C. and said “ What's the matter, did she scare you K.C.?”

 

 

K.C. blushed as he picked himself up, then proudly answered “ no........ er, well she just startled me that's all. I don't like being snuck up on, okay.”

 

“ Oh I'm sorry K.C. I didn't mean to startle you. I just came to find out if anything happened yet” Katy said while batting her green eyes at K.C.

 

Sherman spoke up with authority in his voice, and said “ Why don't you go have a looksee Miss Katy. Sammy wont even think twice if he sees you. In fact he probably wont eve notice you, being so dumb like he is...... haha!”

 

Katy quickly replied “ Okay I will go look and fly around. I'll make it look like I am just passing by, then come back here from another way. You guys just do what you always do until I return. Nikki is still napping, so we don't need to bother him until it's over.”

 

Right after Katy said that she took off flying toward the entrance. She hadn't thought of eating until she saw a bunch of aphids. So she stopped and wondered if it would hurt to have a bite to eat. She glanced back and noticed that K.C. and Sherman had taken off, so she began eating the aphids. It didn't take her long to eat, but she felt really tired when she was done.

 

“ Oh I could use a nap right now, but I should go on and see if Sammy is here yet” Katy mumbled to herself.

 

She flew toward the entrance of the garden, and what she saw amazed her. Katy could not believe her eyes when she saw Sammy slowly creeping up to the trap they all had set. He was sure to be a goner too. She was so mesmerized by the scene that was unfolding before her eyes, that she barely heard Suzee buzz up next to her. Just then they both heard a whistling and saw Farmer Johnson walking up the hill. Katy got a big grin on her face, and looked over at Suzee then nudged her.

 

Katy quietly said “ Watch Suzee, I bet she will step on Sammy!”

 

As both girls stared intently down at the ground. And sure enough they saw her right boot go down and they heard a loud squishing as Sammy met his demise.

 

Just then Farmer Johnson began shouting “ Stupid slugs, man I hate those vile creatures..... I should put out more bait.”

 

As she said that she noticed the box of bait had been knocked over and covered the entrance to her garden.

 

 

 

“Now how in the world did that get knocked over? Well I am not going to bother cleaning it up, just in case more of those horrid slimy things come around. This one's lucky I squished him, or he would have been a sizzling mess in that poison!” Farmer Johnson continued.

 

Katy and Suzee sat laughing at what happened. Finally they got up and flew away, and went back to find Sherman and the others. They saw K.C. practicing his karate, and swooped down behind where he was.

 

After landing Katy whispered to Suzee “ Watch this, it's hilarious!”

 

 

Suzee stood watching as Katy went up behind K.C. and said, “ watcha doin' now?”

 

Like before K.C. got startled, and again he jumped and landed on his butt. Suzee burst out laughing as Katy once again sweetly replied “ Oh K.C. I'm sorry, did I scare you...... again?”

 

K.C. shook his head no, then said “ I was just trying out a new move. It's a very difficult karate move.”

 

As he got up, Katy batted her eyes, then asked him “ Do you know where Sherman and Herman are, we have the best news to tell them.” She wrapped one of her top legs around K.C.'s and happily said “ come on let's go find them.”

 

He was embarrassed, and surprised at the way she was acting. Yet he went along with her while Suzee flew above them. It wasn't long before she saw Herman, then zoomed down to let him know that Katy and K.C. were coming.

 

“Oh really” Herman said suspiciously.

 

“I'm going to fly around and find Sherman, be back real quick Hermie” Suzee quickly said before flying off.

 

As she flew off, Herman's eyes got big at the thought of her calling him Hermie. As he stood with his mouth open, Nikki came crawling up and said “Think nothing of it Herman. Those girls are always messing around like that. You got to keep a level head around them, otherwise your a goner. That's why I kept moving, those females are always eager to get their claws into you. Once that happens- poof your life is never the same!”

 

As Herman stood thinking about what Nikki said, K.C. and Katy walked up. K.C. shook her arm away from his, hoping that the others didn't see what happened. Nikki wiggled over to K.C. and quietly replied “ We saw that, but beware because her clutches are strong!” He laughed it off, like nothing was going on. Just as Herman started to say something, Sherman slithered up with his stereo blasting. Suzee told him not to worry that Sammy Slug was no more.

 

Katy asked Suzee “ Did you tell him what happened Suzee, all the gory details of his cousins demise?”

 

Suzee smiled and answered “ Nope not a word Katy, I thought it would be best to tell it to everyone at the same time.”

 

Nikki eagerly asked “ Was it grotesque, just like you girls always like things to be?”

 

Katy quickly answered “ No.... not hardly, but it was gross. Wasn't it Suzee?”

 

Suzee replied with a grin on her face “ Oh yeah tell 'em what happened Katy, go on don't leave them hanging.”

 

Katy began “ I was sitting there waiting and watching to see if Sammy was coming. Then Suzee quietly sat beside me, and that's when the strangest thing happened.”

 

As Katy paused, they all leaned forward and said “ Well what?”

 

As she continued “ I.......... we saw Sammy slowly slinking up toward our trap, when all of the sudden this big boot came out of no where and squished him. Farmer Johnson stepped right on that slimy, good-for-nothing slug. Now Sherman you don't need to feel bad about wanting your cousin out of the way. That farmer girl took right good care of that for you!”

 

Sherman and the others were amazed that the deed was finally over. Now they had nothing to be worried about. So far it would be nice and peaceful in their garden home. K.C. started doing flips, and Herman yelled out “ Kick up the tunes Sherman, and let's have a party. Will you sing for us Katy, and don't say you don't know how. All of your kind are known for your excellent singing.”

 

Suzee nudged her, then said “ Yeah Katy sing for us, and I will hum along with you too.”

 

Nikki piped up and said “ Oh now you've done it, once she starts she will never stop. I'm going back to what I do best- run and hide.”

 

Katy was spurned on to sing even louder, than she had ever done before. They could see Nikki shaking his head as he crawled away. K.C. began laughing, and doing flips to the music. While Herman dug his holes, Sherman sat bobbing his head back and forth while Suzee buzzed around and hummed.

 

Life was back to normal once again, and all seemed quite content in the garden. But would it stay this way in there tranquil garden? Would they have a new visitor come to their home, or some other insect come to invade there happiness?
