Chap. 2 -

The Reason

Ruby stood up, and began pacing across the living room floor. Back and forth she slowly went as he watched her. John sat quietly, knowing she would eventually tell him what was bugging her. She would stop walking.....start to say something, then start pacing again.

John breathed in and out, which made Ruby even more anxious. She began taking her hands and rubbing them together while she continued pacing. Finally, she stopped...... looked at John then went and sat down by his side. While sitting there, Ruby was unable to say much at first. John sat patiently and waited for her to talk. Again Ruby would start to talk, pause.... then start again. This she did for at least half an hour.

“ Well......... um... I seem to,” Ruby started, then continued “ I, um....... well John I seem to.”

“Just take your time, Ruby” John said, as he patted her on the shoulder.

Ruby looked over at John, then she began “ Remember how I never thought I had any family?”

John slowly answered “ yes....... “

“Well, John it seems that I do or should say did have one” Ruby continued.

As John's eyes got big with excitement, he replied “ Oh yeah, do tell me please!”

“ Well, you know how I have always loved this cottage, and all the area around it?” Ruby asked quietly.

“ Yeah you always seemed to be drawn, almost obsessed with being here” John answered strangely.

Ruby moved where she was facing John, then excitedly said “ It's because I was born here. This was where my real mother gave birth to me? Right here, in this cottage, John. And you know what else, my name is really Ruby Donavon- not Ruby Chambers!”

“Wow” John said in a state of shock. He had heard about the Donavon's before and how wealthy they were.

“ You know what this means John?” Ruby said as she got this wild look in her eyes.

John replied “ No what?”

“No rent! I don't have to pay rent anymore. Isn't that great.... I mean now, I can save that money for a trip, clothes or better yet a new car!” Ruby said excitedly as she pranced around the room.

John squinted his eyes at her, then asked “ Does that mean you're rich now?”

Ruby got up and strutted around like a princess, as John sat contemplating this news. And whether Ruby would change now that she would have what people called noble blood. For the Donavon family were what people called old blood, since they settled here centuries ago.

“Hmmmm.... I don't really know yet. The lawyer that called said they were still working on some stuff” Ruby said, as she continued dancing around the room.

John grabbed her by the arm, then said “ Whoa there girlie, come here a minute. I want to ask you something.... it's important.”

Ruby plopped down next to John. Then looked at him intently with her bright blue eyes and said “ Yes, mon cheŕie.”

John laughed for a moment, then he looked at her and got real serious then asked “ why pray tell were you wanting to step out in front of a car. If you found out such great news- why on earth try and kill yourself?”

Ruby's face went from happy to sad, then said “Oh that.”

“ Yeah that, what's up with that?” John said.

“Well..... well it was between what you said, and this news I got. Oh John, it had me so upset and confused, I just didn't know which way was up” Ruby exclaimed.

“But I am always teasing you about not having a family.... well outside of our group. You know we have always considered you part of our family, even from the first day we met”John continued.

“ I know, I know John, and I love you all, too. In fact, out of all the people I've met since moving here you guys have been great, like a real family! I love you so much John, it's just when you said I would never belong..... really belong to anyone it hurt so bad. You of all people have been the closest friend I've ever had, you're like a best friend to me” Ruby said while explaining her bizarre behavior.

John leaned back, then said “ Oh good, its not because you are depressed, you had me worried for a moment Ruby.”

Ruby hit John on the shoulder, and said “ No.....that's crazy, I'm never depressed. Just upset, angry or confused at times. Like when I got this call from the estate lawyer, I kept wondering why it took them so long in getting to me about this.”

John sat up quickly and asked “ Did he give you any explanation?”

“No, he just adamantly told me that I would find out in time” Ruby continued.

John peered over and said, “How long?”

Ruby frustratingly yelled, “ Ugh, a whole week. You know how long that is John? Seven long days.... it's going to be like an eternity.”

Ruby said while raising her hands in the air, and leaning back on the couch. As John watched her he began to laugh loudly.

He then smiled at her and said, “ Oh Ruby you are so graphic, must be why I love you!”

“ Oh John, I love you too!” Ruby exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around him.

He hugged her back and held her that way for a few minutes. John was happy they were friends, he had even felt like she was the younger sister he never had. John was an only child, due to a tragic accident that killed his parents when he was a young boy. From the moment he met Ruby, they became close, like brother and sister would be.

John immediately was drawn to be her protector, even when they had just met. As he held her in his arms, he began thinking to himself ' It had only been a few years since I met Ruby, yet it seems like a lifetime.'

As he held Ruby they both heard her stomach growl. Causing John to pull back as he laughed to see Ruby's cheeks turned red, from a look of embarrassment. She shrugged her shoulders, and said “ I guess my body is hungry, I didn't eat my pastry this morning.”

John laughed again, then replied “ yeah me either Ruby. You got any grub here, or should we go out to eat Princess Ruby?”

Ruby bashfully said “ I'm not a princess, John. In fact, I am not sure what I am yet. Let's go out, you know how I hate shopping for food!”

“Well, first go and wash your face, then we'll go get some nourishing food” John said as he pushed her toward the bathroom.

As she walked away, Ruby remarked “ Oh do I look that bad?”

John laughed and said “ Just go and look!”

Ruby went to the bathroom, and he could hear her say “ Oops.”

He laughed again as he sat back down. Ruby washed her face and re-applied some make-up. Looking at the blouse she was wearing, she saw some spots from when her mascara ran. So she went in her bedroom to put on another top. As she did, Ruby began wondering if she would have a title or something like that. And if she was wealthy would it give her the ability to afford new clothes?

Just then she heard John yelling “ Come on Rubes, I'm starving, let's go.”

Ruby pranced out, looking radiant as ever. As she smiled at him, happily said, “ Okay I'm ready, let's go.”

They both headed out the door, and Ruby placed her arm in his as they strutted down the lane.
