Katy-Did or Didn't! Chapter four of Unlikely Friends

Another chapter in the lives of garden bugs!

 

 

 

Katy-Did or Didn't?

 

 

As Herman and K.C. stood talking and wondering about Nikki, they heard

“Well, if you want to know something, why not just ask the source!”

 

Herman turned around to see this radiant beauty standing next to a tall broccoli plant. K.C. flipped over while he was trying out new moves. As he did that he almost fell over..... he was in shock.

 

Then Herman began stuttering. As he moved in closer, he asked “ Ah...um... I mean, who...who are you?”

 

K.C. stood with his mouth open staring at the new visitor to the garden. He was unable to say anything, he was so dumbfounded.

 

As she stood leaning against the stalk, Katy batted her eyes, then sweetly said, “Well gentleman if that's what you are? My name is Katy.... Katy-Did to be precise. I know it's an unusual name, but what can you do. It was my given name at birth so I am stuck with it. Anyway boys, I am looking for a friend..... um you two haven't seen a certain fuzzy guy roaming around here in this massive garden? Or has a bird plucked him up, and made a nice dinner out of him?”

 

Herman squinted his eyes, then cautiously asked “Are you referring to Nikki Catz? That guy from the famous rock group - the Fuzzy Caterpillars?”

 

Katy-Did opened her eyes real wide in excitement, then said “ Oh you know of him too. Have you seen the darling lately? He always seems to be one step ahead of me. I have a business proposition for him, where's he at.... is he near here?”

 

K.C. Finally found the strength to speak, and said sternly “ Hold on there missy, just what kind of business proposition? What makes you think he wants to see you? Could be he's been avoiding you for a reason!”

 

Herman piped up saying “ Now, now K.C., give this young lady a chance. Let's consult with the King on what we should do first.”

 

K.C. retorted “ Yeah we must get Sherman's input on this situation. Let me run and find him, you stand guard over this Katy-did or whatever she said her name was.” So as K. C. scampered off in search of King Sherman, Herman stood up straight just like a guard would. He never diverted his eyes off of Katy-Did either. As he watched she began to stretch out her wings, and straighten her sheer dress. Then she reached down in a bag to pull out a compact and check on her hair. Katy stood primping herself while Herman watched. He tried to remain calm, but her subtle movements were getting to him. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, she saw him staring at her. Katy grinned as she looked for a nice spot to sit down and rest at.

 

A few minutes later, K.C. came running back and said “ Shermie's coming, it'll take some time since he carries his house with him. He then looked over and saw that Katy was sitting down by the broccoli stalk.

After K.C. left Sherman, he slithered over to where Nikki had been resting, He found that Nikki was still sleeping, but even though he hated to wake him, he knew he had to. So Sherman nudged Nikki and said, “Excuse me Mr. Catz, but there is a young lady who wishes to see you, I believe K.C. said her name is Katy-Did.”

 

Nikki quietly replied “ Oh no, she found me again. Why can't she just leave me alone, once and for all time!”

 

Nikki started mumbling to himself, and all Sherman caught were bits and pieces of what he was saying. But he did finally hear him say, “ I might as well get this over with, and finally talk to her. Does she have a friend with her, a real cute bee?”

 

Sherman said “ I don't know, but let me go tell the boys you'll be along real soon, ok Mr. Catz.”

 

Nikki shook his head yes toward Sherman, so Sherman turned and began going to where the boys said they would be. He left Nikki to finish waking up by himself.

 

Meanwhile the boys were keeping watch, and they heard Katy saying something. So K.C. said, “ What's that pretty lady?”

 

Katy replied “ Oh, I'm just saying I am sure Nikki will want to see me.”

 

 

K.C. shrugged his shoulders, while looking at Herman. Herman just rolled his eyes, then whispered to K.C, “she sure seems pretty confident with herself huh.”

 

After a few minutes Sherman came into view. When he saw who was waiting for Nikki, he began smiling real big, then said “My oh my what do we have here. You sure are a pretty one, but what I would like to know is what business you think you have for Mr. Catz? He doesn't wish to be disturbed yet.”

 

Katy-Did answered sarcastically, “Oh that's just like him, he loves to sleep his life away. Besides, that will give Suzee time to come here.”

As Katy closed her eyes, she leaned her head back against the stalk of broccoli again.

 

 

This left Herman and K.C. shocked. Not only was there a female in their midst, but by the way she was acting so confident and assuredly happy. All Sherman did was shake his head, and thought ' oh boy there goes the neighborhood.” As Sherman glanced over at Herman and K.C. he saw the both of them gawking over at Katy.

 

“Boys!” Sherman yelled.

 

They both jumped, looked away from Katy and over at Sherman. He motioned with his head for them to come over to him. When they reached where Sherman was he glanced over at Katy; and saw that she was still resting her head against the tree.

 

Sherman sternly spoke to them, and said “You both need to stop gawking,

NOW, and get back to work, pronto! I will stand here and watch this “ Katy-Did”. Nikki told me she has been stalking him for years, and now he is to tired to run anymore.”

 

“Wow”” K.C. exclaimed.

 

This befuddled Herman, and he asked “Did he say for how long she's been following him?”

 

“Nah” Sherman said after looking over at the beautiful green beauty resting by the broccoli plants. He continued saying, “He did say that her friend should be along pretty soon though.”

 

K.C.'s eyes got big as he said, “You mean we will have another female in the garden? Who is it, and is she pretty like Katy-Did?”

 

Sherman peered over at K.C., then said “I didn't ask Mr. Catz, he just said be ready for some buzzing to occur!”

 

Herman muttered, “ buzzing... hmmm.”

 

Sherman stood proudly and replied, “Yes but you both have some work to do before the rains come... so chop, chop!”

 

Herman and K.C. went off sulking and muttering to themselves. Sherman stayed within a reasonable distance to Katy-Did, while she stood their basking in the sun. Her wings shimmered in the sunlight and she was humming. It was a tune he recognized as one of Nikki's, possibly from his first album he ever recorded.

 

Just then Sherman thought he heard a buzzing noise. It was faint at first, but through Katy's humming the distinct sound of buzzing began to get louder. He looked all around to see if he could detect where it was coming from.

 

When all of the sudden out of nowhere, he felt a 'whoosh' on the opposite side of his head as she buzzed by him.

 

“Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!”.

 

Katy saw her and yelled, “ Suzee.... you made it finally.”

 

Suzee landed on the ground, then said “yeah I ran into a field of flowers, and you know me I couldn't resist doing my thing.”

 

Katy laughed and said “Yeah you do that a lot, but it's your job too. That's why we have always missed catching Nikki, but not anymore!”

 

Suzee swooned, “ Oh Nikki, he's so dreamy.”

 

Katy said sweetly “hey he's my McDreamy!”

 

Then both girls stood laughing at each other.

 

Sherman stood watching the two females for a few minutes, then cleared his throat and said “Excuse me.”

 

The two females turned and began to look at Sherman in a puzzled way.

 

Just then Suzee gasped saying, “Are you Sherman, Sherman Snail right?”

 

Sherman said in a long drawn out way “ yeaaaahhhhhhhh, why?”

 

Suzee replied in a laughing manner, “Oh cool, cause I got some snail mail for you!”

 

Katy burst out laughing, and kept repeating 'snail mail' while pointing at Sherman.

 

Suzee flew over and gave Sherman a piece of paper that was marked “snail mail”. Then she went back to where Katy was standing and they quietly began talking to each other.

 

After he read the note she gave him, Sherman yelled out loud “ Oh great, just dandy! This is just great, what else can happen today?”

 

Katy peered over, and said to Suzee, “Wonder what his problem is?”

 

Suzee asked Katy “ Uh, so who is he anyway.... besides being Sherman Snail?”

 

Katy replied shrugging, “Oh he claims to be a King, King of the Snails!”

 

Suzee buzzed over to where Sherman was standing, and said “Ah what's the matter Kingy, not a good news letter huh?”

 

Sherman said very unhappily “ My cousin said he is coming here, all he will do is slime everything up. There really goes the neighborhood, and all he will do is complain about not having a roof over his head. Oh this day is just getting better and better!”

 

“Oh cheer up Shermie, maybe he wont show up” Suzee replied while buzzing in place.

 

Sherman yelled “Stop that buzzing around me already, it's so annoying girl!”

 

Suzee stopped, then said “ You don't have to bite my head off. I'll just go back to where Katy is then, sheesh.”

 

After Suzee left Sherman, Herman and K.C. came into view. K.C. looked over at Katy and Suzee, saying “Wowie-Zowie Herman they sure are beautiful!”

 

Herman just blinked and blinked at what he saw. They both stood staring over at Katy and the new beauty that was gracing their garden.

 

Even though Suzee was a bee, she was a unique one. She was a bright yellow with black stripes just like any normal bee. What differed her from others was her wings, they shimmered as she buzzed about. When the sun hit them Herman saw gold, silver and copper flakes that sparkled in the sunlight. K.C. stood with his mouth open until he was bumped by Herman.

 

Without moving his eyes, he asked “Huh, what is it Herman?”

 

Herman exclaimed, “K.C. if you're going to stare at them, at least close your mouth. And for heavens sake stop the drooling!”

 

K.C. chuckled saying, “ Oh yeah sorry. But isn't she a beauty? I mean she is the prettiest bee I have ever seen, Herman. Wonder why Nikki has been avoiding these beauties?”

 

Herman answered sharply “ He must have a very good reason, otherwise he would have been with them.”

 

K.C. looked around, and he saw Sherman mumbling to himself while pacing back and forth. He said, “Look at Sherman he seems troubled about something. Let's go over and talk to him. The girls aren't going anywhere, at least until Nikki comes to take care of them!”

 

They left the girls whispering to each other, and headed to where Sherman was pacing. He was definitely agitated about something.... but he wouldn't stop his pacing long enough to tell K.C. and Herman what was wrong. So they kept busy until they saw him stop, and was ready to tell them about the letter he got. It was then that they knew something was wrong, soon to be catastrophic.
