Life of Riley Hunter

Chapter 4

The Guest

It's been months since the woman entered my life. Yet the most she has ever said to me was ' thank you.' Oh, and an occasional 'good morning' or ' please', other that that she's never uttered a word. So I have yet to find out what her name is still!

Besides all of this, her presence is quite calming to me. Now I'm not saying she can ever replace my lovely wife. Because no woman could ever take her place in my heart, as I may never replace whatever she's lost. Yet we are able to co-exist as happy as can be.

She seems to be comfortable being here, and does lots of reading. In fact, she has acted like a kid in a candy store; so wherever she has been there was no reading material. Since the government took over all the newspapers, television stations, and many radio stations its hard to believe what is said. So we take it all on face value, except a few who have underground leaflets who print what is happening in some parts of this once Great Land!

In fact one should be due to come out soon, so the next time I go to the diner I can get one. It claims to be from that infamous group called “ Anonymous”, or it could be something the great Breitbart started back in the year 2011. I just read it, then put it in a safe and secure place to make sure it lasts long after I pass on. So much has changed since Obama was put into office for a second term. That's when things started happening, although slow at first, then as time went on it gained momentum. You could liken it to a small stream growing as the flood waters raged on. That's when I knew I had to prepare for the impending disaster.

The government didn't know which way was up. I remember one time some committee was asking different officials about something, and each one claimed they didn't know or they plead the 5th so they couldn't say anything. As time went on each one was either let go, or they resigned. ( with pay I might add) Not one ever went to jail for the crimes they had perpetrated. One by one different Senators were systematically knocked off. Now I'm not saying this was a fact, but it did seem strange that anyone who spoke out against the government mysteriously died.

Again that was the end of the life as we knew it. Many people were too busy with the disasters that had been happening in one place after another. So most of what the government was doing fell on deaf ears. Although there were many who tried to expose the governments more or less flaws. Actually the whole system was in shambles, with only a few really caring to hold it together.

Nearing the end of Obama's second term in office, the United Nations took over. As they did there best to bring not just this land, but the whole world back together. It was a very daunting task, but many were up for the task. I can't recall who took over after the Benghazi tragedy, but that was the pivoting point when the dominos started to fall!

Obama didn't realize what was happening, or his staff wasn't informing him. In one fell swoop they kept telling to either don't worry about it, or tell him to go play basketball. And who knows where the Vice President was at, for all we knew he was cut out of the loop long ago or even dead.

I heard the woman sigh, so I turned my head to look her way. She was reading one of the political magazines. I began wondering what article caused her such grief. As I stared at her, she glanced up my way and she had such a sad look on her face. It was like I had been when I first lost my beautiful wife. So I'd assumed she lost someone dear to her heart. I just smiled at her to let her know that it was alright, and understood the pain she was feeling. I still feel the pain from my own loss to this day! I saw a tear from her eyes drop down, and land on one of the blouses my wife used to wear.

That's when I turned my head to look out the caves entrance. Letting her deal with her pain in a way that she was accustomed to doing. I wasn't sure if she would welcome a hug right now either, so I let her be.

I could feel something brewing in the air, just then she came up behind me and rested her head on my shoulder. It felt nice, and I didn't dare move an inch as I just stood there. I looked out at the horizon and saw that a storm was beginning to form. We had maybe a good two to three hours of clear day left.

All of the sudden I felt her lift her head off my shoulder and point down toward the rivers edge. I grabbed the binoculars that I had hanging, just to make sure we were both seeing the same things. A young boy was squatting near the waters edge getting a drink of water. I handed her the binoculars so she could get a look, she was stunned as I was that he was out here. I started to go out, but she touched my arm then said “ let me go, he might take to me easier.”

I shook my head yes, then she began the descent down after handing the binoculars to me. As I watched in awe at how well she was able to climb down, never realizing she spoke to me. Slowly she reached the riverbank, bent down and dipped her hands in the water to splash her face.

Oh hi there” she said to the young boy.

He smiled at her and started to walk away. She began to follow, that's when he turned around and it looked like she was talking to him. So he stopped walking to listen to her, and I could see him shake his head. I saw her point up toward my cave, and then she took his hand and led him to the base of the mountain. She somehow conveyed to him the danger of climbing up, yet he mastered the way like a pro-rock climber. As they got closer I stepped away, to get a snack ready for our new guest. After they got near the entrance I assume he was hesitant about going in.

I heard her saying in a calm voice “ It's alright come in, the man is nice. Let me introduce him to you, and the place is really massive.”

She let him go in first, and she followed then smiled at me, which I did in return. At first he stood there letting his eyes adjust to the dim light the cave held. Then with some coaching from the woman, she guided him over to the couch. I was already back in the makeshift kitchen stirring up a pitcher of lemonade. I thought to myself ' who doesn't like this to drink.'

I poured three glasses for each of us to drink. I had already set out a platter of donuts and muffins. I walked into the living room space and set two of the glasses down in front of them.

She replied quietly. “That's Riley Hunter, and this is his home. He's been very kind to me, and he will treat you the same way. Please have a donut if you're hungry, and here's something to drink!”

The young boy looked at the woman, then over to me then grabbed the glass and drank it down. Then he looked at the platter of treats trying to decide which ones he wanted first.

I retorted to him “ go ahead, eat all you want as I can get more!”

So he ate until he could eat no more. My wife and I always wanted kids, just never had the time or money. Then when she got sick, that put an end to all those plans. Now I got these two people that have come into my life. Maybe now I will find out what their names are.......my life just began to get very interesting!
