Humming

Humming

A Poem by john l smith
"

Late night/early day

"

As I drink my very, very, early coffee

The sky outside still black of night

A hummingbird feeder hanging

Gives an unexpected sight

But first an owl sounds

And a surprising, raven retort

Then a hummingbird arrives

Well before daylight’s start

Its day began in the dark

A million beats of wing

The epitome of labor's way

From this tiny thing

Because I’ve left that feeder there

And built nests all round

I feel blessed to be a tiny part

Of nature’s magic sound

This poem shows that you observe your surroundings ever vigilantly. You add twists to your nature poems that I completely miss when I'm enjoying my own wilderness here. Like it never even occurs to me to look out to see whatever birds might be doing prior to dawn (I am often up in the wee hours too). This is the kind of astute observation that wakes me up to what I'm not noticing! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

yes, busy little bees, er, I mean, birds
Thanks again Margie
the birds must just love you..Dave...
it's a magic kingdom for them.
and the owl...you reminded me of Shakespeare's poem "Winter" in which he speaks of the nightly owl with his song...and i always think..."what? they make interesting sounds, but song?"
not exactly.
thanks for this comfortable morning offering.

What a lovely poem Dave. You are indeed blessed. And you have your own hummingbird. I have watched on TV and know the speed that they flap their wings. Absolutely fascinating, I wish I could have seen it. You have put it firmly in the memory bank with this write. As I sit here, vino in hand, delighting in Brixham, there is a huge seagull sitting close with his beady eye on me. Menacing or what?

I envy you, as there's been no hummers appearing at my feeders yet. Seldom do the springtime passersby linger long. Later in the summer is when several show up. Till then, I'll drink coffee and think how you're enjoying them.
