Last road to nowhere

Last road to nowhere

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)
"

War poem Could be any war

"
Climbing the long hill
He stopped for breath
Looked back at his
Old road
Winding around the hills
He could see his old house
He’s already missing it
He turned
And kept walking away
Trodding on
Knowing his mum
Was still crying
Into her now cold tea
This war
Not his war
The new day would begin
Soon
He has excitement in his limbs
The adrenaline was there
Just hope he could return home
Pretend he had had a holiday
After a month or so of training

Not long into his walk
He met up at the next bend
With John
He had gone through school years with him
They were both 18

Shared a cigarette
With His mate
And they both walked on
Bravely to the station
Never to return from
War
Or see that road again

The cigarette butts
Lay in the fields for a while
Till birds swooped down
And stared in slight disgust
Knowing
The boys would never return
