Looking back
Looking back I thought I had it all Some said of me Simple Beauty rare unusual A strange torrid past A very small list of lovers A few wilted roses Modesty when needed And you You were my next door boy Type Safety in small numbers We danced on our first date Never did that step out like that again The tendrils in my hair line Stood up As you walked in. That door I thought I had it all that night In the end it’s you-that had it all You had me on the first hello That first toss of your bushy fringe out of your Blue dark heavy lashed eyes That first dance as you held me tight The bush band echoed As I grinned at you shyly The checkered flannel shirt The faded Levi’s The sunrise at beach As we sat and talked Yes just talked It was good It still is Just somehow different 48 years have passed We will have each other’s backs Through fights smiles tears tantrums laughter That’s what is good Having a history To sew us together again Yes The hems come apart A fair few times Somehow we sew them right Into the night Dreaming of our tomorrow’s And remember our yesterday That stitches us together © 2024 Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)Reviews
