Diggings

Diggings

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)

They cheered
Like a bonfire lit up
Roaring
Embers flying
They had found it
No not a gold nugget
A pebble
A diamond in the rough

They knew it’s worth
He looked around
The earth was smiling
The wind was humming
The insects buzzing
The sun beat down hard

Who had cheered?
There was no one there
Just old him and his BAg of tools
He cheered with the rest
Took a swig of the best
Went home to his dusty shade
His little place way out west

I am a collector of rocks. Me and the grandchildren, always searching for the special one. We put in Grandma rock garden at home. I liked the story dear Julie. The men who worked alone and did well. A private battle to be won. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

I have known a number of people who "collect" -- some who "search & collect" (using metal detectors) -- and you have captured their obsession to find some unexpected trinket or morsel or artifact. What I find most amazing is how they have such vivid imaginations, reading whole lifetimes into some old relic they've found. They are like writers, similar to what Jacob says, about digging for a nugget that sparks a story. This is one of the tightest poems I've read by you. Love how it's nicely focused (even tho I also enjoy your more signature rambling style!) (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I read this as finding the truth of one's being. Digging into life to find the reason for our existence. That nugget of possibility that makes our life worthwhile.
