Australia Day today!!!!A Story by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)its Australia Day today am so proud to be an Aussie. love this beautiful land.I grew up with reciting that wonderful poem. called My country by Dorothea McKellar I still know a few verses as our teacher in 5th Grade Mrs. Dickinson loved her poem. In the end we all learnt and recited it by force every morning before class. As well as singing God Save the Queen, then Advance Australia Fair our kids sang in schoool. Nowadays Australia Day is a public holiday. We get to stay home from work or school and do an Aussie bbq or go to the beach or go to the city for all day celebrations in our suburbs and cities all around this great land. Im so proud to be an Aussie. Today my Australia day im having a quiet one, just writing for about an hour this morning. I have some family coming around later we will go to the local RSL Club, have a all you can eat smorgasbourd for $24 Aussie dollars. What more could I want. I used to do bbqs but today after a busy week and being unwell we going to the Club. Never done that before!!! The weather here in Sydney been a lot of over 40 plus degree days which is very hot. Been heatwaves all around Australia this summer. When I was growing up sure we went under the backyard hose and it was hot but this is chilli hot currry hot very hot. We never had a/c in bedrooms but this house I bought out in the western suburbs has 4 a/c, now I know why the ceilings are rafted and high no insulation in the ceiling just flat tiles. My electricity bill is on permanent plan to pay off. My Australia day is relaxed, no stress just chillin. All my family cannot be here. Some are spread around. doing their own thing. My dog is glad im home from work. He gets lonely some. I dont go to all the crowded fun happy busy places that are going on all around. If you havent gathered by my work already Im a bit of a loner i dont feel guilty for just writing and doing my own thing on this a fun Australian day. My fun is in my relaxation in my writing of my ditties. Australia is a beautiful place. Its not just koalas and kangaroos. If you have never been here book a ticket soon. Go to Sydney, go to Ayers Rock, go to Queensland anywhere. I have not seen it all and im nearly 60. I know I wont go overseas before I die. one I do not have a passport or the funds. Im happy to travel 3 hours up or down the coast. My grandfather lived 88 years he said he had been overseas. He had been on the Manly Ferry. lol. Well Manly is beautiful. So content just to be here in our heatwaves, our cold winters, but not as cold as USA. by any means!!!! Australia Day means a great country to me. Its Home and Away and Neighbours on TV, its Olivia newton John, its Carl Barron, Its Paul Hogan Crocodile Dundee and his shows from the seventies, its vegemite on toast, slim dusty songs its so many things!!! its western suburbs of Sydney, its bondi, vaucluse, its our blue mountains wonder, its avo and cheese toasted, my fathers old tomato vines, the smell of the beach, the smell of bbqs in backyards. Its the city with Harbour bridge and opera house, the Manly Ferry, the Aussie slang words, Thongs (yes wearing them now), on my feet. Always think of that Carl Barron comedy sketch about thongs lol. I dont walk around wearing mini flags on my head or a cape flag all day like a lot do. But Im still a dinki di aussie and love my country. I dont go to all the fireworks or celbrations around the suburbs or the city. I also dont go to the beach on this a special day. I can do that on my hollidays or any other weekend. I can watch them tonight on TV. Yes lazy maybe. But Aussie is about pleasing ourselves, we can be lazy, we can be revellers in the city, we can be anyone we like. Its in our law to be ourselves. So here i sit in the suburbs, the lawnmowers are buzzing, the dogs are barking, the tv shows are on, my familys coming around (2) today, the club lunch is for me combined birthday maybe for Tuesday!!! I lay comfort in the fact that if i drove to Bunnings today or any saturday or sunday morning there would be a volunteer firefighters bbq stand where I can buy a sausage sanga (sandwich) for one dollar. Now you cant be more Aussie than that. I love the history the poets that we bore, Henry Lawson, Banjo Patterson, the great authors that we have, the great film industry that is famous all around the world, the landscape, the climate, the people, the beauty of it all. Im glad to have been lucky enough to be born here, Could of been born in squalour in poverty or in an African jungle. Im so glad im just me here. Happy Australia Day guys. Have fun whether we are in bed snoozing the day away or revelling in the city or writing some poetry or stories like me just now. Just have fun be yourself, be safe and God Bless. xx Happy Australia Day!!! © 2018 Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)Reviews
