ValentineA Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)
It came and went
Or did it? Like any other day In her life A day of reckoning Of her alone Her mortality Her loneliness The shops and adds Ablaze with red Red red red hearts Red roses She walked past the flower stall He saw her eyes Aflame with red Tears washed her mascara Panda eyes he knew I’ll buy you a rose he said She looked He held out a yellow rose She clutched her red heart Now ablaze With yellow red purple blue heart emotions It stopped beating for a second She held the rose It was her yellow rose Her heart awash with yellow laughter Yellow is your colour he said As they dined Later that night As he kissed her tears goodbye She bade him farewell That was thirty years ago She still buys yellow roses for his grave Their children wore yellow to the funeral It happened on Valentine’s Day Yellow is the new red she thought As she walked the streets late one valentine night now an older wiser lady She ignored the red posies in the shops And bought herself a single yellow rose Yellow rose for you dear she heard As she passed an abandoned flower stall She cried yellow tears all the way home She still loved him He was still with her Yellow is her colour Yes definitely © 2018 Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)Reviews
