The Lock of Heart

The Lock of Heart

A Story by Julie Shi MacPherson
"

We never think of who we are until its of importance but, what if we had to search for a identity that does not exist. Humans are born with names and have names that belong to them but which is real?

"

The Heart of the Forest

This bittersweet melody that sticks to my subconsciousness might drive me insane one day but also might save me from pain. A string of fate that strings us all together within a never ending universe. Attaching itself to the deepest part of our hearts if this string were pulled the person would either retaliate or will be no longer be sane. From birth, a human puts a lock on their heart this lock holding seven keys and seven holes only six of these holes are ever unlocked in a lifetime. Humans are simple creatures that believe in trust however, they will not always believe in everyone maybe that is simply mystery.

The window held a soft tint of white as the air mixed heat and coldness, the slightest touch sent water dripping from the tips of my fingers. With this water, I rubbed my fingers together sending a small chill down my arm. It was nights like this that put me at ease the most a night I could relax. Cold air brushed against my face sweeping my hair along with it, the full moon hanging in the middle of the sky. Its reflection cast on the water of a bucket nearby moving ever so calmly in the breeze. A soft creaking came from the rocking chair that I rocked back and forth old and worn out.

It was a night like this that I lost my family.

"Brother, brother look it’s a firefly."

"It sure is." I said with a smile on my face enjoying the moment even more than my little brother.

There was a small glint of light in his eyes as he chased after the firefly, accidentally splashing in a hole filled with mud. His pants now covered in mud he continued to chase the firefly in delightment a smile on his face. Over his laughter, you could hear the cicadas in the distance putting a feeling of serenity in the air.

"Jirou, your all muddy lets go inside and get you all cleaned up."

"Okay, Lei." He said bolting towards him.

Jirou's shoes left behind faint imprints as he walked on the wooden floor its color blending with the floors. Every so often, our weight on the wood would cause the floor to make a sound as we passed. When we had finally reached, the bathroom I let out a sigh we

successfully evaded waking our mother who had been sleeping on the sofa.

I shut the bathroom door behind us making sure to muffle the sound even the softest echo could wake mother. Jirou excitedly turned the faucet on, water hitting the tub splashing upwards slowly filling it. We both sat quietly waiting for it to fill listening to the soft gushing of the transparent water as it hit.

"Get in."

Jirou stepped into the tub mud mixing with the water giving it a tint of brown to the clear water. Rolling up my sleeves, I took a bar of soap from the cup bored and slowly started to peel away the wrapping revealing a square white object. Taking the soap, I dipped it in the water running the water over both my hands and the soap. The dry soap now felt slippery to the touch as I placed it on my younger brother’s head rubbing it softly into his scalp.

"Hey, Lei do you think I'll ever get to see the city?"

"Once you get better I'll take you to see the city I promise." with my finger, I scooped a peace of the soap of the bar in my hand placing it on his nose.

"Pinky promise." he asked holding out his pinky.

"Pinky promise, if I lie, I will drink 1000 needles, and die." I clasped his finger with my own giving a shake.

As I washed the dirt in the grim out of his hair, he grew silent as if he were deep in thought. I ran my fingers though his hair, it brushed the insides of my fingers leaving a trace of soap behind it as it left my hand. I felt his deep emotion as it filled the room leaving after his long sigh. He turned to face me a faint smile appeared on his face putting my feelings at ease

"I can't wait."

"Neither can I." I smiled back.

The clock in the hallway tolled twelve as we both exited the bathroom heading silently in the direction of our bedroom. However, not all was, as it seemed the bad feeling I had in the pit of my stomach grew worse when we both rounded the corner. I saw the broad backs of two figures cloaked in black instincts kicking in I grabbed for Jirou covering his mouth.

"Brother can't breathe."

"Quiet." I snapped.

A menacing aura surrounded the two men as they searched though the rooms looking for something. Only a splint second had past but one of the men straighten his back and looked in our direction. Startled I stifled my breathing looking down at my brother whose body was shaking violently.

"What’s wrong, Katsu" the man with a taller figure spoke.

"Nothing I thought I felt something. Keep searching they have to be somewhere around here we can't leave without the prophesied one."

Did he know we were here? I questioned as I took my hand from Jirou's mouth offering my hand. Jirou took a hold of my hand shaking even more than he had before; we slowly retreated towards the living room. When we finally reached it we stopped dead in our tracks, the sight in front of us was horrid and repulsive. Our mother laid still on the couch her clothing and the floor was drenched in the blood her intestines had been removed in a hurried manor, which now lay on the ground. Even the darkly painted walls had not escaped the massacre covered in both crimson blood and dirt.

I hurried to cover Jirou's mouth huddling him in my arms his tears soaked into the sleeves of my shirt. Silently we crept over the lifeless body trying to escape from the house as swiftly as we could. Jirou took my hand holding tightly to mine looking up at me with teary eyes as if waiting for an explanation.

"Brother what happened to mom?"

"She went to heaven."

"No I don't want mommy to leave," he said on the brink of tears

"It’s alright I'm here. I won't leave you everything will be okay." I assured his placing him on my shoulders.

The forest passed in a blur of colors as I ran as fast as I could. My chest felt as if it would burst any moment now. Running was the only thing I had really known how to do due to my upbringing in that small cottage in the woods. The animals in the forest were so silent I could hear the soft rustle of leafs when my feet hit the ground and my heavy breath with every exhale. When we had finally reached a opening I was dumb founded a sleek black object covered the ground. It was rough to the touch when I raked my fingers along its surface. My feet covered in both mud and blood from sharp objects that had cut open my feet

A bright light flooded my eyes approaching at a fast speed I sat there like a deer in the head lights. It was a vehicle something my mother had tried explaining to me more than once only I never listened.

"Get out of the street you moron." someone yelled as the car passed by.

My heart pounding wildly against my chest as I tried to cross the street once more finding the same obstacle from before. Only this time the vehicle barreled straight at us its tires coming to a screeching to a halt stopping only inches away from us. I fell to the ground in shock the soft rumble of the engine tickled my ears. The door flew open a young man stumbling trying to get out. A sudden chill ran up my back when his hand met my shoulder sending fear all though my body.

"Let go!" I shouted pulling away from the stranger’s strong grasp.

"Which one of you is the one?" the man shouted back holding tighter than before his grip brought pain to my shoulders.

"What are you talking about let us go!" fear swallowed my voice.

Unable to use words I tried to run but it was no use the man simply picked us up and threw us into the backseat of his car. The man straightened his back as he shut the door looking to the road freezing at the sight of a 40-ton semi 5 inches from his face. I sat watching in horror as the semi itched closer.

"Brother I love you." Jirou said fastening my seat belt as quickly as he could.

"No stop!" I yelled but it was too late. Not only had I not stopped him I could not save him in return.

The semi's horn blared as it made impact with the car the red lights of the semi danced on my vision.

Then everything was swallowed in black..
