Velvet EyesA Poem by Julia LedoIts funny what a mispoken phrase can become
I knew a girl
She blew my mind With looks unheard One of a kind She had velvet eyes And cardboard lips With taffeta hair And strawberry jam fingertips Her eyes soft and warped With color and texture rich My crush on that velvet Brought to fever pitch Corrugated cardboard lips Not even close to paper thin But unashamed and smart Cut out above her chin And hair like a prom dress With a skirt so full When she walks its caught In a dance of push and pull Then theres her strawberry touch All seed and no rind Clinging to your skin And leaving those sweet traces behind Girl of my dreams If she would just wait But there's a boy Who's brow was slate And his hands are ceiling tiles Holding back the sky And keeping out the rain I say who am I? I dont have hair of sand Molding to any castle I'd make Nor a tall and broad brick wall body Mine like dough, waiting to bake No I cannot be like The slate brow boy I do not have eyes Like his of corduroy Only eyes like solo cups Filling to the brim Just cups within which You cant even swim But I have a heart like a jackolantern Carved open and bright With the candle of my love Burning through the night And her velvet eyes May haunt my sleep But if she'll have him I cannot weep Her friendship is a precious jewel More than diamond more than pearl And I will do anything For the velvet eyed girl © 2018 Julia Ledo |
